Jo-Carroll McCullough was born the daughter of Ted L. Sullivan and Donaleane Shelton Sullivan on June 20, 1949 in Jonesboro, Arkansas and departed this life on August 25, 2011 in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 62 years.
She was united in marriage July 7, 1968 in Springfield, Missouri to Charles McCullough.
She is survived by her husband, Charles McCullough of the home in Thayer, Missouri; two daughters, Jennifer McCullough-Kinley and husband, Dwayne of St. Peters, Missouri and Allison Martin and husband, Scott of Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Warren McCullough of Little Rock, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Jack and Megan Martin of Nashville, Tennessee; one unborn grandson, baby boy Kinley; one sister, Geraldine Kellogg; other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Donaleane Sullivan.
Jo-Carroll earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Arkansas State University and was a retired Speech and Drama teacher. She enjoyed teaching and was known for her dedication to her students.
She was of the United Methodist faith and will be remembered as a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and a loyal friend. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Thayer High School Gymnasium. Burial was in Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. of Thayer.

Zula Isabelle Peterson was born the daughter of Pank Hurst and Minnie Grubbs Hurst on February 6, 1925 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and departed this life on August 18, 2011 in Batesville, Arkansas at the age of 86 years.
She was united in marriage to Bernard Peterson who preceded her in death in October of 1982.
She is survived by one son, James Pulley and wife, Maxine of Bradford, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Phillip Wayne, Judith Kay, Julia Elizabeth and Tiffany Ann; eight great grandchildren, Autumn, Christopher, Adam, Daniel, Crystal, Dylan, Miranda and Chasity; eight great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hutchinson of Pontiac, Illinois; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pank and Minnie Hurst; her husband, Bernard Peterson; one granddaughter, Pamela Sue Pulley; three brothers, Johnny, Lewis “Nude” and Harold Hurst and three sisters, Ethel Downs, Lois Barrick and Julie Justus.
Zula was known for pride in her personal appearance, being an excellent homemaker and maintaining a clean and tidy house. She enjoyed gardening, soap operas, shopping and spending time with her family.
She was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and sister. She will truly be missed by her family and many friends.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Brother Wayne Hurst officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 21st from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the funeral home. Anthony Azar was born the son of Joseph and Marina Azar on February 26, 1933 in Florissant, Missouri and departed this life August 15, 2011 at his home in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 78 years.
He was united in marriage November 22, 1980 at St. Ann, Missouri to Katherine Louise Hirsch.
Tony is survived by his wife, Katherine Hirsch of the home in Thayer, Missouri; three sons, Steven Azar of Florissant, Missouri, Joseph Azar and wife, Janet of Wentzville, Missouri and Michael Azar and wife, Sondra of Hazelwood, Missouri; one grandson, Kevin Azar of St. Louis, Missouri; three brothers, Carl Azar and wife, Ruth Ann of Florissant, Missouri, Mike Azar of Winfield, Missouri and Francis Azar of Florissant, Missouri; one sister, Theresa Asberry and husband, Foy of Ferguson, Missouri; sister-in-law, Adelia Azar of Camdenton, Missouri; his mother-in-law, Ethel Hirsch of Thayer, Missouri; six brothers-in-law, Albert Hirsch, Herbert Hirsch and wife, Kathleen, Gary Hirsch, Roy Hirsch and wife, Debbie, Bill Hirsch and wife, Cindy, and Larry Hirsch and wife, Betty; four sisters-in-law, Betty Garrison, Marie Vincent and husband, Harry, June Davis and husband, Danny, and Janice Howell and husband, Johnny; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marina Azar; his father-in-law, Albert Hirsch; six brothers, Raymond, Louis, Paul, Joseph, Charles and Stanley Azar and one sister, Mary Lauer.
Tony was a businessman, having owned Azar Automotive in Vinita Park, Missouri for many years.
He was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Imperial, Missouri.
Tony enjoyed traveling and sightseeing with his family and the time he spent at Hirsch Feed Store in Thayer, meeting and making new friends. He enjoyed life to the fullest and never met a stranger. Tony will truly be missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Thayer. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

Burt Austin Volkening was born the son of William Volkening and Fern Crawford Volkening on June 12, 1924 in Macomb County, Michigan and departed this life on August 12, 2011 in West Plains, Missouri at the age of 87 years.
He was united in marriage July 21, 1946 at Indianapolis, Indiana to Carol Louise Pepper, who preceded him in death March 5, 1996.
He is survived by three children, Richard Volkening and wife, Susan of Fort Gratiot, Michigan, Thomas Volkening of Eagle, Michigan and Jane Chesham and husband, David of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one brother, Wilbur Volkening of Gaylord, Michigan; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Fern Volkening; his wife, Carol Louise Volkening; one great grandson, Travis Stone; one brother, William Volkening and one infant sister.
Mr. Volkening was a decorated Veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country during World War II. He received numerous awards and medals including the EAME Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and also the Good Conduct and Victory Medals.
He was a millwright, working for the New Haven Foundry in Michigan for many years.
Burt was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was actively involved in the Thayer Fun and Friends Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed greeting everyone at the door as they arrived.
He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and brother. He will truly be missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri with Brother David Case officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, 6:00 to 8:00 PM and from 12:00 noon until service time on Wednesday. Burial will be in Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
Memorial services for Shirley Florence Roberts, age 75, of West Plains will be held, Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 AM at Koshkonong Cemetery. Local arrangements were handled by Carter Funeral Home, INC in Thayer.
Buryl Nelson Wright was born the son of Dave Alonzo Wright and Lola House Wright on January 28, 1920 in Moore Township in Oregon County, Missouri and departed this life August 8, 2011 at Shepherd’s View Assisted Living in Alton, Missouri at the age of 91 years.
He was united in marriage January 24, 1942 in Alton, Missouri to Helen Mae Watson and to this union three children were born, Wayne, Frances and Bobby.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne Wright and wife, Judy of Alton, Missouri and Bobby Wright and wife, Beverly of Alton, Missouri; six grandchildren, Michael Wright and wife, Hope of Junction City, Kansas, Jeffery Wright and wife, Tressa of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Jason Hudson and wife, Tricia of Little Rock, Arkansas, Amy Wright and Jason Rieck of West Plains, Missouri, Holly Wright Reese and husband, Blake of Alton, Missouri and Sara Wright Wheeler and husband, John of Alton, Missouri; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Wright, Thalen and Tayla Wright, Jace and Jaylee Reese and Sophia, Lilllian and Henry Hudson; one sister, Helen Conner of Maryville, Illinois; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Wright on April 5, 1973; one daughter, Helen Frances Wright Hudson; his parents, Dave and Lola Wright; four brothers, Marshall, Kenneth, Willard and Ray Wright and one infant sister.
Buryl worked in the CC Camp near Winona, Missouri and later entered the United States Army June 12, 1942 during World War II and was assigned to the 506th Engineer Light Ponton Company. During his time of service, he served in the South Pacific in New Guinea, Luzon and the Southern Philippines. He earned numerous awards and medals, including the APTC Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars, WW II Victory Ribbon, ATCM Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He was discharged from The Hospital Center in Camp Carson, Colorado on January 19, 1946. He honorably served his country and enjoyed telling and retelling stories from his time rendered. He always proudly said, “if it wasn’t for President Harry S. Truman he would not have made it back to Alton, Missouri.”
In 1953, he and Fount Frey opened Frey and Wright Garage in Alton. He later retained full ownership of the garage and changed the name to Wright’s Station and Garage. He ran the business with his sons, Wayne and Bob, until he retired in 1982.
Buryl was a lifelong member of the Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years and took great pride in caring for the Smyrna Cemetery. He was well-known for his love of antique vehicles. He loved restoring and showing his vehicles in car shows and parades, where he won many lst place trophies and awards.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and a loyal friend. He will truly be missed by his family, friends and the community in which he lived.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 12, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church near Alton with Brother Bill Bales officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Burial will be in the Smyrna Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
Louise Marie Miller was born the daughter of Lemuel Simpson and Meekie Lucinda Hooper Simpson on July 23, 1919 in Oregon County, Missouri and departed this life on August 7, 2011 in Alton, Missouri at the age of 92 years.
She was united in marriage to Donald Miller, Sr., who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two children, Ann (Barton) Cline of Fenton, Missouri and Jim Barton of Alton, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Simpson) Boze of Alton, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lemuel and Meekie Simpson; her husband, Donald Miller, Sr.; one daughter, Laverne Robbins; one son, Donald K. Miller, Jr.; four brothers, Ralph, Cecil, Thomas and Lloyd Simpson and six sisters, Eva Simpson, May Huddleston, Verna Crews, Mary Lee Sisco, Helen Simpson Hastings and Loreen Parton.
Louise was a cosmetologist, working as a hairdresser for several years. She enjoyed her flower garden and making quilts for her personal use and heirlooms for her family. Her passion in life was her love of animals and spending time with her family.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margaret Leora Goins was born the daughter of Fletcher D. James and Janie Lee Jones James on February 13, 1922 at Wirth, Arkansas and departed this life August 5, 2011 at Shady Oaks Health Care in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 89 years.
She was united in marriage November 26, 1938 at Alton, Missouri to Don H. Goins, who preceded her in death on December 13, 2006.
She is survived by three children, Dulcie Couillard and special friend, Earl Cullom of St. Charles, Missouri, Richard Goins of Camdenton, Missouri and Emma Lea Skelley and husband, David of Thayer, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Kelley Rogers, Karen McDonald, Gregory Couillard, Jennifer Crawford, Mark Couillard, Jon Skelley and Sara Huffman; twelve great grandchildren; special nephew, Charlie Goins; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Janie Lee James; her husband, Don Goins; one grandson, Michael Skelley; one daughter-in-law, Shelby Goins; one son-in-law, Jim Couillard; two brothers, Amos and Grover James and one sister, Maudie Lee Meeks.
Margaret attended Couch High School, worked in several area businesses and was the Supervisor of the Couch High School Cafeteria for many years. She was a dedicated homemaker and an excellent cook. She will be remembered for her delicious homemade chicken and dressing and grandma’s doughnuts.
She was a Christian lady and a life long member of the Myrtle First Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the DAV Ladies Auxiliary.
Margaret was a kind and caring person with an outgoing personality and a heart of love. She will truly be missed by her family and many friends.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 8, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Brother David Honeycutt officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 PM until time of the funeral. Burial will be in the Myrtle Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

Alice Loree Herbold was born the daughter of Henry H. Reef and Allie M. Ramsey Reef on June 24, 1919 at Thayer, Missouri and departed this life July 30, 2011 at Shepherd’s View Assisted Living in Alton, Missouri at the age of 92 years.
She was united in marriage February 27, 1938 at Thomasville, Missouri to Wayne Herbold, who preceded her in death on October 4, 1959.
She is survived by two daughters, Alice Deane Simpson and husband, Gary of Thayer, Missouri and Glenda Ann Herbold of Nixa, Missouri; four grandchildren, Holly, Keith, Justin and Kristin; seven great grandchildren, Billy, David, Nathan, Jennifer, Toby, Ryan and Brady; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Allie Reef; her husband, Wayne Herbold; one brother, Lilburn Reef and one sister, Grace Taber.
Alice was a seamstress and employed by Puritan Fashions in Thayer for twenty years. She was a dedicated homemaker and an excellent cook. She will be remembered for her delicious homemade lemon pies and angel food cakes.
She was a Christian lady and a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Thayer.
She will truly be missed by her family and many friends.
Graveside services will be Monday, August 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Thayer Cemetery with Brother Edward Casey officiating. Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

Edith Ora Hurtt was born the daughter of Elmer Stark and Victoria Ivy Stark on August 7, 1925 in Elm Store, Arkansas and departed this life July 26, 2011 in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 85 years.
She was united in marriage February 23, 1949 at Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to Eugene Hurtt who preceded her in death September 26, 1966 .
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Kay Patrick of Walnut Grove, Missouri; one granddaughter, Terri Eugena Jones of Duenweg, Missouri; three great grandchildren, Ashely Kay Whiteside, Richmond “Trey” Steel III and Austin Lee Jones; one sister, Lois Stewart and husband, Frank of Kansas City, Missouri; two brothers, Coy Stark and wife, Wanda and Jimmy Stark and wife, Debbie all of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; two sisters-in-law, Sue Phelps of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and Thelma Stark of Utica, Kansas; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Victoria Stark; her husband, Eugene Hurtt and three brothers, Homer, Tom and Troy Stark.
Edith was a member of the Church of Christ at Bona, Missouri. She worked for twenty years as a Nurses Aide in Ash Grove, Missouri.
She was loved by all and will be sadly missed. She spent her life serving others.
Graveside services will be Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 2:30 PM in the Riverside Cemetery at Mammoth Spring with Terry Frizzell officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.
