Winfred Norris Kornegay was born the son of Alfred Norris Kornegay and Ansil (Smalley) Kornegay on April 5, 1928, in Marvell, Arkansas, and departed this life October 15, 2014, at his home near Thayer, Missouri, at the age of 87 years.

He was united in marriage November 2, 1948, in San Angelo, Texas to Vivian Lucille Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Vivian Kornegay of the home in Thayer, Missouri; three sons, Winfred Norris “Buddy” Kornegay, Jr. and wife, Linda of Mondamin, Iowa; Scott Nathaniel Kornegay and wife, Debbie of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Jeffrey Vaughn Kornegay and wife, Karen of Thayer, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kara Icard, Kirk Kornegay, Alan Kornegay, and Ryan Kornegay; six great grandchildren, Noah Icard, Nathaniel Icard, Lilly Icard, Chelsie Kornegay, Ryan Kornegay, Jr., and Raven Kornegay; two sisters, Sylvia Atkinson and husband, Johnny of Elaine, Arkansas, and Lois Holloway and husband, Charles of Marvell, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Ansil Kornegay and one sister, Sue.

Mr. Kornegay was a Veteran, proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. While stationed in South Korea, Vietnam, Germany and Stateside, Winfred worked in Military Radar Communications. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1967 after twenty-three years of honorable service.

Willie and Vivian enjoyed country life and the time spent together on the family farm. Willie was a livestock farmer and enjoyed feeding and caring for his herd of beef cattle.

He was a member of the Thayer Church of Christ, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will truly be missed by his family, friends, and the community in which he lived.

Funeral Services for Winfred “Willie” Kornegay, age 87, of Thayer, Missouri, will be Saturday, October 18, 2014, at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Shawn Deree officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday from 1:00 PM until service time.

Burial, with military honors, will be in the Jeff Cemetery, near Thayer, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in his memory, to the Paragould Children’s Home and may be left at the funeral home.
