Vallie Mayfield, 88, entered into heaven Friday, June 23, after battling bone cancer. She will be greatly missed.
Vallie Caroline Mayfield was born on January 11, 1929, to John and Rosie Marshall in Kirbyville, Missouri.
At age 6 Vallie was adopted by William Richard and Lela Geist of Salem, Missouri. She attended Salem Public Schools and graduated from Salem High School in 1946. Vallie went on to earn a Registered Nurse degree from Missouri Baptist School of Nursing in St. Louis in 1949.
Vallie was married to Roy Mayfield on October 22, 1949. To this union three daughters were born, Cherry Elaine, Joyce Ann and Donna Sue.
Vallie worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in St. Louis, Hannibal, Kirbyville and St. Charles. She was employed at West Vue Nursing Home in West Plains. Mrs. Mayfield began the Health Occupations Program at the Votech School in West Plains and taught there for 18 years. She guided many young girls to explore the world of nursing. After retiring, she did volunteer work for First Baptist Church in the office and food bank. She was a member there since 1964.
Vallie loved to quilt and craft especially Christmas decorations. She especially enjoyed the craft group at First Baptist.
Mrs. Mayfield was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Thelma Marshall and Rose Ann Wallace, husband, Roy; daughter Donna Miller and grandson William R. Miller.
She is survived by daughters, Cherry Taber and husband Del of Pomona; Joyce Knapp and husband Don of Rolla; three granddaughters, Abigail Unzicker (Bill) of Valparaiso, Indiana; Stephanie Stoecker (Charles) of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Emily Sanders (Nick) of Ithaca, New York; one grandson Adam Miller, and six great grandchildren.
Vallie was passionate about the nursing career that she dedicated her life to and her family whom she loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in West Plains at 1:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

To Mrs. Mayfield’s daughters and the rest of the family, I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a wonderful lady who did so much to help others. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so saddened to hear of her passing. I think of her often as she was my health occupations instructor. I continued on in the nursing field and owe a lot of what I learned to her. My deepest condolences
