Lorene Bertha Pohnert was born the daughter of Johnnie Andrew Pingleton and Issie Bell Combs Pingleton on February 23, 1917 near Couch, Missouri and departed this life April 14, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 95 years.

She was united in marriage December 24, 1936 in Alton, Missouri to Ben E. Pohnert, who preceded her in death June 5, 2011.

She is survived by one son, Donald Rex Pohnert and wife, Sammie Jo of White Deer, Texas; one daughter, Dolly Ruth Jewel of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; four grandchildren, Dudley Rex Pohnert and wife, Cindy of White Deer, Texas, D’Lisa Dawn Pohnert of Amarillo, Texas, James David “Jamie” Pohnert and wife, Kirsten of Canyon, Texas and Deidre Dawn Farless and husband, Devin of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; three great grandchildren, Lane, Jordan and Chandler; three step grandchildren, Barbara Judah, Pamela Loftus and Sydnei Farless; two sisters, Joyce Mills of Witchita, Kansas and Martha Vranes of Portland, Oregon; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Issie Bell Pingleton; one son-in-law, Don Jewel; one sister, Helen Underwood and five brothers, Grover, Jessie, Harry, Jack, and George Pingleton.

Lorene was a charter member of the Thayer Free Will Baptist Church and served as the first church clerk. She remained a faithful and active member throughout her life, serving as Sunday School teacher and was secretary of her Sunday School class for thirty-five years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed working in Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of the Thayer Garden Club and Jolly Workers Extension Club. In her earlier years she sold Avon, making many new friends as she worked.

Lorene was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and preserving fruits and vegetables for future use.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, Mother, Ma-Maw, great Ma-Maw, sister, aunt, and a loyal friend. She will truly be missed by her family, her church family, and the many friends who were a part of her life.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the Thayer Free Will Baptist Church at Thayer, Missouri. The family will receive friends at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer on Monday evening from 5 to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
