James “J.L.” Thompson was born the son of Paul Thompson and Hattie Combs Thompson, on September 16, 1938, in Myrtle, Missouri, and died August 18, 2017, at his home in Bourbon, Missouri, at the age of 78 years.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Thompson of the home in Bourbon, Missouri; eight children, Brenda Hanley of Ozark, Missouri, John Thompson of St. Louis, Missouri, Kevin Thompson of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, Janice Herron of Jefferson City, Missouri, Kelly Schmitt of Parker, Colorado, Christina Bunton of Sullivan, Missouri, Angela Cain of Bourbon, Missouri, Bradley Doyle of Bourbon, Missouri; twenty-three grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his step-mother, Lillian Thompson of Columbia, Missouri; two brothers, Dwight Thompson of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and G.W.Thompson of Wentzville, Missouri; four sisters, Patricia Hall of Pocahontas, Arkansas, Charlene Rau of Fredricktown, Missouri, Detria House of Ocala, Florida and Marshelia Gast of Columbia, Missouri; one special aunt, Jean Simmons of Thayer, Missouri; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Hattie Thompson; two daughters, Valerie and Catherine Thompson; one brother, Paul Thompson, Jr. and one sister, Charity Thompson.

J.L. was a Christian and was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was a twenty-two year Veteran of the United States Navy. J.L. was a member of the Clifton Masonic Lodge No. 463 in Thayer, Missouri, VFW Post No. 7147 in Cuba, Missouri, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion Post No. 81 in Bourbon, Missouri.

He retired as supervisor from the State of Missouri Fire Safety Division, after many years of service.

J.L. was deeply devoted to his family and will truly be missed by all.

Funeral services for James “J. L.” Thompson, age 78 of Bourbon, Missouri, formerly of Myrtle, Missouri, will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 12:00 Noon at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Brother Clay Risner officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 until service time.

Burial will be in Cotton Creek Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc. in Thayer.
