Funeral services will be held Friday, May 13, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, West Plains, Missouri.

He will lie in state until time of service.

Burial will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery, West Plains, Missouri, with military rites provided by West Plains Honor Guard and the Missouri Funeral Honors Program.

Hubert was born September 25, 1926 to Henry Columbus Risner and CeCil Jack Risner. He died May 10, 2022 at his home.

He was a hard working man. If he wasn’t working he wasn’t happy. Hubert was known around town for bushhogging and garden plowing. He finally quit bushhogging at the age of 92

He was a veteran serving in the Army in WWII in the Phillipines.

In 1947 he married Mildred and was married 71 years until her death in 2018. They worked side by side and many would say she was his good side.

Hubert worked 20 years at International Shoe Factory in West Plains. He was a volunteer firefighter for West Plains for over thirty years. He worked for Howell County Sherriff’s Department as captain in training future officers. He worked as security guard for OMC for several years. He was a farmer and always had a garden. Mildred and Hubert were members of the farmer’s market. He had his garden in this year and his corn was up. Monday he sat outside watching it grow.

Tuesday morning he was struggling to breathe; his heart was failing; his last words were, “take care of my dog and he called out for “Mill” his wife.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; only son, Jr.; ten half brothers and sisters, and one infant sister, Irma.

He is survived by one daughter, Janet Oziah, Rogersville; children, Ann Maire Pendergrass and Becky Flatness; daughter, Jackie Dean and husband Larry, children Jason Dean and Jackie Lee Dean.

Granddaughter, Laura Gregory, children, Noah, Gavin, Tyler, and Ellie Mae Gregory, West Plains; grandson, Adam Risner and wife Amanda and daughter Ava Risner, West Plains; Donna Spencer, daughter-in-law, who took care of Mr. Risner for the last four years.

Thank you to Curry Street Church of Christ for all your help and care you gave to Hubert. Thank you to the aids and nurses who helped make it possible for Hubert to live at home. Thank you Arthur and nurse Linda at Ozark Independent Living and VA in West Plains.

Mr. Risner was a Christian and tried making amends. We have a loving Saviour who is forgiving and He will never leave or forsake you.

Instead of flowers, Hubert would like memorial contributions made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis Tennessee.

    The Risner Families,

Our Deepest Sympathy to all of you on the passing of Hubert. Since I was a little girl I knew Hubert and Mildred not only through going to church with them at Curry Street but personally as well being Gwen Cozort’s granddaughter. Wonderful memories of the both of them. After Mildred’s passing he was very attached to his dog with him taking him everywhere he went except church. I always enjoyed chatting with him especially when he was selling his garden produce on the side of the road. He will be missed. During this difficult time may God give each of you peace, strength, comfort, and encouragement. May God bless all of you.
    In Christian Love,
    Mrs. Amber Redburn and Corby

It saddens me to hear of his passing. Hubert would bushhog my place and we became friends. My Father served in WWII and I talked to Hubert about getting some V.A. benefits which he so rightly deserved. He told me he joined the Army underage as he felt it was his duty to serve. He was one of the hardest working man I’ve ever known especially for his age. Summer heat would not slow him down where a younger man would looking for shade. RIP and hope to see you again.
