Vernita (Jody) Miller

Vernita (Jody) Miller was born in Thayer, Missouri a triplet daughter of Arnett Hackworth and Jettie Hackworth (Lewallen) on December 18, 1949, and departed this life on July 10, 2023, at Ozarks Healthcare Hospital, in West Plains, Missouri at the age of 73. Her husband James “Shorty” was by her side, holding her hand.

After graduating from Couch school, she moved to St. Charles, Missouri finding employment with Brunswick Bowling for twenty years and then worked in nursing home healthcare. Jody married Shorty on March 26, 1994.

Jody worked at DRS in West Plains, Missouri for twenty years and retired in 2019. She was a member of Alton-Thayer Elks Lodge #2545 for thirteen years, was the chaplain for five years and was a past Exalted Ruler. She belonged to the Patriot Guard Riders “PGR” and the Ladies Auxiliary of the CVMA.

Jody was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler. She loved the Cardinals, Mickey Mouse, family and friends. She had a heart of gold and was a wonderful person inside and out. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband James (Shorty) Miller; two sisters Anita Shaffer, husband George of Buffalo, Missouri and Marietta Barton, husband Carlos of Marthasville, Missouri; one brother Duane Hackworth, wife Linda of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri; two sisters-in-law Nelda Hackworth of Batesville, Arkansas and Linda Hackworth of O’Fallon, Missouri; five children Cindy Kidd, Chris Miller, Sherri Haury, husband Glenn, Starla Miller Drake, husband Larry and Chuck Miller, wife Brie; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

She was prececded in death by her parents Arnett and Jettie Hackworth; one triplet sister Juanita Hackworth; three brothers Dolan, Lester and Dean Hackworth; two sons Ronnie Miller and Jamie Miller; twin granddaughters Sharralynn and Kylie Miller; one nephew Douglas Hackworth.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri. Visitation will be Friday, July 14 from 12:00 p.m. until time of service.

Suzie Campbell

Suzie Ann Campbell, age 67, of Alton, Missouri passed away July 9, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains, Missouri. She was born November 27, 1955, in Gardena, California to Orville and Wilma Rudd.

Suzie married Glen Ivan Campbell, August 9, 1973, in Alton, Missouri. They was married for 39 years and within this union they had two daughters and five grandchildren.

She enjoyed crafting, gardening, taking small road trips, going to yard sales and Hobby Lobby. She loved making wreaths for anyone who wanted one and decorating her house for Christmas. Walking into her house at Christmas time was like walking into a winter wonderland. She always had a western playing on the TV.

Suzie loved everyone that she met. If you met her, you had a friend for life. She was the most caring, selfless person ever. She never knew a stranger. To know her was to love her and to love her was to know her. She was a cornerstone in our little hometown. Suzie will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She may be gone but will forever be in our hearts.

She is survived by her significant other Victor Paul Bates, of Alton, Missouri; two daughters Vickie Campbell of Alton, Missouri and Glenda Campbell (Lorenzo Pratt) of Colorado Spring, Colorado; one special niece Tina Huddleston (Ronnie); one very special adopted son Catlin Pankey; two sisters Judy Kinser, of San Antonio, Texas and Tammy Rudd, of Alton, Missouri; one brother Roy Rudd of the home; five grandchildren Dylan Fettig, Toby Simpson, Nathan Simpson, TaPango Cook and Jennifer Bell; three great-grandchildren; many adopted grandchildren that loved “their” Nana; numerous Aunts, Uncles, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents Orville and Wilma Rudd; her husband Glen Campbell; one brother Gary Rudd; two sisters-in-laws Marie Rudd and Nickie Rudd.

Funeral services for will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri. Visitation will be held Wednesday July 12, 2023, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri.

Interment will be on Thursday, July 13, 2023, in Huddleston Cemetery, Alton Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.

Doyle W. Irby

Carter Funeral Home Thayer

Doyle W. Irby, 78, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas passed away on July 4, 2023 at his residence. Doyle was born January 27, 1945 in Pontiac, Michigan to the parents of Vall Irby and Delena Exie Terry. Doyle married Judith Ann Reimers in Fulton County, Arkansas on August 26, 1962. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Doyle was baptized on September 1, 2021 by Pastor Morgan.

Doyle enjoyed traveling in the RV, and loved fishing with his dogs. Cold Springs was a place of many memories for Doyle . He had a good time going to the river and lakes, especially with his last black lab, Nikki. He would go backroading with his dog Lilly to watch squirrels and deer too. Doyle also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Doyle was survived by his wife, Judy, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, Vall and Delena Irby, sister, Juanita Vonallmen, brothers; Donald Irby and infant brother David Leroy Irby.

Virgina Rebardie

Virginia Lee Stewart Rebardie was born the daughter of Richmond and Naomi (Huddleston) Stewart on April 19, 1943, in Alton, Missouri. She died on July 4, 2023, in Thayer, Missouri at 80 years old.

She spent her growing up years in Texas City, Texas working as a nurse’s aide.

One of the highlights of her life was pioneering with her dear friend Elsie Herbold in Arkansas and Oklahoma while working at a variety of jobs to support herself.

She married the love of her life Larry Rebardie Sr. in June 1992. They also pioneered together and was a great asset to the Thayer Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and loved by many.

Virginia loved to write poetry, take pictures and paint. She was not afraid to tackle any new art styles and then share her projects with others. Knowing everyone’s sizes was important to Virginia so when she was at a thrift store or a garage sale, she was on the lookout to add to her family and friend’s wardrobe.

Virginia will be remembered for her love of Bible truths and sharing them with others. We will dearly miss our sister, Virginia Lee.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years Larry Rebardie Sr., her father Richmond and her mother Naomi.

She is survived by Larry Rebardie Jr., his wife Gwen and Warren Rebardie, wife Jennifer; six grandkids; five great-grandkids; one beloved sister Arlene (Steve) Whittington; two brothers Rich (Gail) Stewart, and Keith (Jean) Stewart; many nieces and nephews, and many youths who grew up calling her Aunt Virginia.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023, 1:30 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Thayer, Missouri.

Joyce Mills

Joyce (Pingleton) Mills, 93, passed away on June 29, 2023, in Gainesville, Florida. She was born on August 14, 1929, in Thayer, Missouri to Johnnie Andrew Pingleton and Issie Bell Combs Pingleton.

She will be remembered as Mom, Grandma, Gijo, and Aunt Joyce. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. She treasured her family and loved the Lord. She has left a legacy of love for all who knew her and has touched our lives in a special way. Her love will spread for generations to come.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Issie Bell Pingleton; her husband Kenneth H. Mills; her sons Lloyd, Loren, and Larry Mills; sisters Helen Underwood, Lorene Pohnert, and Martha Vranes; Brothers Harry, Grover, Jack, Jessie, and George Pingleton.

She is survived by son Leonard Mills of Kansas City. Daughter Linda McSwain (Bill) of High Springs Florida; eight grandchildren Eric McSwain (Kristi) of Kansas City, Chris McSwain (Shellie) of Alachua Florida, Michelle McSwain of Alachua Florida, Tamera Lawrence (Matt) of Lawrence Kansas, Cody Mills (Rebecca) of Kansas City, Kansas, Weston Mills (Bre) of Kansas City, Kansas, Erika Mills of Lawrence, Kansas and Justin Mills of Wichita, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Donald Leo Hall

Donald Leo Hall was born the son of Leo Hall and Jueldine (Honeycutt) Hall on November 22, 1953, in Thayer, Missouri and departed this life at the age of 69 years on July 1, 2023, at Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Thayer, Missouri.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Acklin, husband Matthew of Norfork, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Troy Bettis and Kyle Bowers, Thayer, Missouri; two great-grandchildren; one brother Steve Hall, wife Ronda of Thayer, Missouri; one niece, Amanda Jens, husband David of West Plains, Missouri; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Jueldine; paternal grandparents, Andrew and Lydia Hall; maternal grandparents, Rocoe and Augusta Honeycutt; one son, Timothy Hall.

He owned a dairy farm for 30 years which he loved. He also collected guns and knives and loved hunting, fishing and flower gardening.

He was a Christian and one of his favorite verves in the Bible was Matthew 18:3,4. He made many crafts for VBS and church camps for several years. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Mattie Anderson

Mattie Sue (Horrell) Anderson, 89 of Hardy, Arkansas entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 26, 2023, at the CHI St. Vincent North Hospital in Sherwood Arkansas.

Mattie Sue was born on April 8, 1934, in Hardy, Arkansas to James William Blanford “Bud” and Glenn Edith (Hosman) Horrell. She was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker, loving mother of six children and a licensed cosmetologist.

On October 9, 1955, she was married to Rodney Elbert Anderson in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Together they celebrated fifty-five years of marriage. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2011.

She is survived by her children, Rodney Anderson (Becky), Joe Anderson (Paula), Jana Allen (Brent), Jon Anderson (Linda) and Andrea Anderson; ten grandchildren, Kyle Anderson (Jana), Terry Lynn Danahy, Derek Danahy (Teagan), Joseph Anderson (Debbie), Holly Braun (Joe), Justin Montgomery (Becky), Jacob Allen (Kellie), Amy Wood (Brandon), Ava Hunt (Brice), and James Anderson (Francesca); twenty great-grandchildren; son-in-law Terry Danahy; sister-n-law Carolyn Horrell and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mattie Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Rodney and Rosie Anderson; her beautiful daughter Tammy Danahy; great-grandson Cooper Richard Anderson; her sister Willie Ann Garner; her two brothers Lee Horrell and Jack Horrell; brother-in-law Linn Garner; and sister-n-law Clella Horrell.

Graveside service will be Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Bronaugh Cemetery, Hardy, Arkansas under the directions of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.

Doyle Vonallmen

Doyle Eugene Vonallmen, 71 of Thayer, Missouri, passed away June 26, 2023, in West Plains, Missouri. Doyle was born April 9, 1952, in West Plains, Missouri to Estil and Ruby (Montgomery) Vonallmen Earls.

He was united in marriage to Carolyn Endicott Martin on February 12, 2022. Doyle was a very gentle and humble man. He avoided conflict and would gladly lighten others’ loads by completing jobs others avoided. He loved God, his family and his country. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; one brother Dennis, wife Joyce; one sister Bonnie Earls Matlock, husband James; two sons Benjamin (Skip) Vonallmen and Carl E. Collins, Jr.; three daughters Barbie Simmons, husband Joe, Christy Collins Pennell and Sherry Collins; grandchildren; numerous family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Shirley Earls, husband Jerry; two brothers Billy Vonallmen and Jerry Vonallmen, wife Sandy.

C. Scott Carter

Friends will gather at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2023, at the Old Post Office in West Plains to celebrate the life of Scott Carter who died unexpectedly Friday night, June 23.

A genuine proud Zizzer member (and student body president) of the amazing Class of 1980, Scott was a kind and loving member of an historic family. But, even more, by his life and standards he lifted up the community and those around him.

Curtis Scott Carter valued and practiced scholarship, graduating magna cum laude from William Jewell University in 1984. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1983, while a junior at William Jewell, he was honored to be selected a student scholar to study at Oxford University in England. He remained socially active in campus affairs, particularly in the arts of which he was a patron. He was also president of the fraternity alumni board. Vanderbilt University granted Scott a juris doctor in law and an MBA in 1988.

During his legal training he was chosen to clerk for the Missouri Appellate Court system. Internships were had with the West Plains Bank and the Garrett and Ray law firm. Enrolled in the Missouri Bar in 1988, he practiced in Kansas City until health issues prompted return to his home and family in Thayer and West Plains where he had always maintained and nourished his roots.

While living in Thayer, he participated in the family funeral home business and was a licensed funeral director.

Scott always tried to add more than he took away, maintaining a vigor for public service. As a member of Clifton Lodge he was a proud Mason, Rotarian (president), the faith community and general volunteerism. Scott never was unkind, coarse, impatient or less than adoring to his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother Saundra Dodge Carter and Leonard Johnson, Springfield, Mo.; his brother Dr. A. Brent Carter and Laura Johnson of Birmingham, Ala.; nephew Aaron J. Carter, Chicago, Ill.; nieces Anna Caroline Carter, Iowa City, Iowa, and Hallie Dodge Horne, West Plains; brother-in-law Vaune Horne, West Plains; and aunt Nancy Dodge Caplinger, Springfield. Also surviving are several cousins. Extended family include Julianne Johnson, Washington, D.C., and Kurt Johnson, San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father Larry L. Carter and his sister Robin Carter-Horne.

Masonic Rites and the inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. June 29 at 2:30 at Oaklawn Cemetery after the celebration of Scott’s life.

Ruby Jean Steed

Ruby Jean Steed, daughter of the late Claude Emmett Cook and Cecil Mae (Robinson) Cook, was born September 16, 1936, in Salem, Arkansas. She departed this life on June 15, 2023, at the age of 86 years & 9 months. She was united in marriage on March 29, 1951, in Hardy, Arkansas to Charles Edward Steed, and was blessed with over 72 years of marriage. In the early 1960’s, Charles and Ruby started their business, Steed’s Grocery Store & Gas Station, being one of Thayer’s first convenience stores. They operated the store for two decades, working seven days a week, before Ruby decided to slow down and spend time chasing their teenage twin boys and their athletic schedules. Retirement did not last long, as Marion Morse (Morse Furniture) in downtown Thayer, asked her to take a part-time job selling furniture. Part-time turned into full-time, and in the mid-1980s, the Morse’s sold out to Chad & Barbara Butler (of West Plains) and formed Thayer Furniture. Mom learned the ropes from great businessmen such as Johnny Cox & Steve Honeycutt and continued working for the Butlers. She became Manager, which she held for 20 years. Ruby loved her job and took pride in picking out quality furniture. She loved the people she worked with: Johnny, Steve, and especially George Landis! Mom loved her customers and always knew what would sell best. She enjoyed store visits from various local business folks in town, especially from her pal Pat Freeman. Pat and Rosie were special people to our family. Pat’s tales and camaraderie brought her great joy. Annually, the Dallas TX market trip with Barbara Butler was a special event to order new furniture. Charlie always thought the only reason she worked was to cover her tab for what she wanted to buy for their home. Charlie knew a trip to the market meant a new piece of furniture! Mom was very grateful to the Butler Family for giving her that opportunity & they became the best of friends. Mom had a great eye for furniture and home décor, supplying thousands of families in the area with the best. In the early 2000’s Ruby finally decided it was time to retire, so she could spend more time with her children and grandchildren.

Ruby loved her church and her church family at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. She was a member for over 65 years and served as the Treasurer for nearly 30 years. Ruby’s love for her children and grandchildren was endless. She forever looked forward to Christmas where she would buy everyone something special for them individually. Gram loved her family, and she would always have a meal prepared for them for holidays and never forgot a birthday. Gram Ruby was simply the best and we could not have asked for more, thus there is now an irreplaceable new void in our hearts.

Ruby is survived by her husband, Charles Edward Steed, and five children: Charles (Butch) & wife Donna of Thayer; Jerry & wife BJ of Mountain Home; Barbara of West Plains; Kevin & wife Lana of Mammoth Spring; and Kelly & wife Angela of Thayer. Ten grandchildren: Angi Littlejohn of Memphis; Becky (Rodney) Hallmark of Horseshoe Bend; Christina Mainprize of West Plains; (TJ)Thaddeus Jay (Beth) Steed of Ash Flat; Charli Steed of Springfield; Jacob (Samantha) Steed of Republic; Kelsey (Morgan) Flynn of Little Rock; Ashley Steed of Republic; Zachary (Chandra) Steed of Thayer; and Ruby Frances Steed of Mountain Home. Ten great-grandchildren, and five nephews: Michael Cook, Eddie, Jim, & Doyle Wrenfrow, and Emmett (Bubba) Cook. One niece, Hazel Rodrigue, and special friends, Dow and Carol Wilkerson.

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by one infant son, Larry Edward; one infant grandson, Michael Wayne; two brothers: Paul and Emmett Cook; one sister, Anna Pearl (Cook) Wrenfrow; four nephews: Kenny Cook, Jimmy Joe Wagner, Bill & Robert Wrenfrow; one niece, Linda Kay Wrenfrow; two uncles: Silas & Raymond Cook, three aunts: Leida Cook, Tressie Wood, and Irene Simms; daughter-in-law, Margaret Steed.
