Mary Belle Calhoun

Memorial services for Mary Belle Calhoun, 96, West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 11:00 .a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the Oak Lawn Cemetery.

She was born the daughter of the late Lonnie Higgs and Ruth Thompson Higgs, on August 2, 1924 in Newport, Arkansas and died July 6, 2021 in West Plains, Missouri.

She was united in marriage to Earl C. Calhoun, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two children, Coy Calhoun and wife Carolyn, West Plains, Missouri and Wanda Ledwa, West Plains, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Linda Calhoun, West Plains, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; one son, Earl Wayne Calhoun and one daughter, Juaneta Jones.

Mary Belle and her husband loved to travel all over, purchasing items that they could use in their booth at the fair grounds flea market in West Plains.

Local arrangements were under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains.

Dorothy Prewitt

Carter Funeral Home Thayer

Dorothy Lillian Prewitt departed this life on July 9, 2021, in Creve Coeur, Missouri, at the age of 96.

A lifelong resident of Oregon County, Missouri, and North Central Arkansas, she maintained a farm east of Thayer, Missouri, with her husband Albert Prewitt since 1946. It was a special place with a front porch always welcome to family, friends, and neighbors. She possessed abundant talents, a creative spirit, and always applied herself, whether in gardening, baking, crafting, or similar challenging endeavors. All who knew her celebrated her quilting skills, and she continued to produce intricate quilts into her 90s. Her abilities are best memorialized in the numerous quilts she created for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was born on August 20,1924, in Fulton County, Arkansas, to Merritt and Lillian Harrell. From a young age she displayed a commitment to education balanced with dedicated service to her family. At just the age of 14, she assumed parental duties during the week such as cooking and supervising daily activities so that she and her three brothers could live in town to attend school.

After graduating high school, she began her teaching career in Norwood, Missouri when WWII caused a teacher shortage.

Following graduation from high school in Thayer, Missouri, she attended the predecessor to Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, at a time when few women attended college, while also working and raising a family. She graduated in 1955 with honors and special recognition in Business and Math. She was a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon honorary math society, Pi Omega Pi Business Honorary Society, and Delta Kappa Gamma International Women’s Teacher Organization for which she served as an officer and actively participated throughout her career. She taught Business Education and Math at Couch High School for 40 years until her well-earned retirement.

In nearly 61 years of marriage, Dorothy and Albert maintained their farm and provided for their two sons, Larry and Gary Prewitt, who with the motivation, support, and inspiration of Dorothy and Albert achieved advanced degrees and many professional successes. During their retirement, Dorothy and Albert frequently hosted their grandchildren at the farm.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Ernest, Norman, and Truman Harrell; her husband; her son, Gary; and her granddaughter Sarah Prewitt.

She is survived by sister, Audrey Emery of Arnold, Missouri; son, Larry and his wife Janice of Wildwood, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Jo Beth Anderson and her husband Larry of Thayer, Missouri; grandchildren, Tammy Prewitt of Wildwood, Missouri, Brian Prewitt and his wife Elizabeth of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Kevin Prewitt and his wife Lindsey of Shawnee, Kansas, and John Prewitt and his wife Maggie of St. Peters, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Ashtyn and Ansley Nicholson, Lillian, Larry, Sarah, Penelope, Scarlett and Remington Prewitt; and many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and former students.

Baptized in 1940 in the Warm Fork River, Dorothy was a devoted and faithful follower of Christ and member of the Church of Christ throughout her life. She modeled a faith for her family and friends that is at the heart of her legacy to the next generations. She was a blessing to her family and friends, a model of perseverance, diligence, loyalty, and integrity, and will be missed dearly.

Funeral services for Dorothy L. Prewitt will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri with Brian Prewitt officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to service time at Carter Funeral Home in Thayer, Missouri.

Burial will be on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 in Thayer Cemetery in Thayer, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.

Andrea White

Funeral services for Andrea White, 55, West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Ratterree officiating, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, West Plains.

She was born the daughter of the late Clifford Pettitt, Sr. and Carolyn Wiggs Pettitt on March 7, 1966 in Hannibal, Missouri and died July 5, 2021 in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

She was united in marriage August 17, 1983 in Willow Springs, Missouri to Michael White. To this union three children were born, Geneva Button, Joshua White, and Matthew White.

She is survived by her husband, Michael White, of the home, West Plains, Missouri; three children, Geneva Button and partner Jason Watts, West Plains, Missouri, Joshua White, West Plains, Missouri, and Matthew White and wife, Abbie Conley, West Plains, Missouri; five siblings, Clifford Pettitt, Jr., Grace Stillwell, Kristal McLean, Nanetta Swailes, and Jenny Pettitt; five grandchildren, Tristan White, Kenter Button, Baylor White, Morrigan White, and Jonah White; several others that she considered her own, Hailey Wake, Alisha Wake, Brandon Barnes, Collen Barnes, and Brynna Barnes, and several nieces and nephews and many others she called family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dewayne Pettitt.

She loved to travel, especially cruises. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. She considered everyone as her friend; there was no separation between friends and family. She was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinal and Dallas Cowboy fan.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

James C. Holloway

Carter Funeral Home Thayer

James Clinton Holloway was born January 6, 1927 in Stigler, OK to Clarernce Albert Holloway and Allie (Emery) Holloway. He joined his wife Patricia on July 2, 2021.

He was married to Patricia on March 11, 1951, at Cordell, OK.

James was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his daughter Susan (Holloway) Mast, one son John Douglas Holloway, two brothers Clarence and Glen Ray, and three sisters Irene, Hazel, and Betty Jo.

He is survived by one brother Bill of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one son James and wife Deborah of Cody, Wyoming; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; other relatives; and many friends.

Dad always placed family at the head of the list, even packing up and moving to Alton MO, after retirement to be closer to his grandchildren. There they met two very special people, Joe and Freda Johnson, who along with their children became like family and did so much for him over the years.

James thought of the staff at Shepherd View as family, and our thanks for all they did the last couple of years.

He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army serving from October 4, 1946 to January 31, 1948. He was a cannoneer with Btry A 1st FA Bn serving in Korea.

James loved his farm in Alton. He enjoyed traveling to see the country and to fish.

He was a Christian and a member of the Church of Christ in Alton, and the American Legion in Alton.

James will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Opal Irene Andrews

Opal Irene Andrews was born in New Liberty, Missouri, the daughter of James Silas Allmon and Hester Bradshaw Allmon on December 16, 1927, and passed away on June 26, 2021 at her home in Republic, Missouri at the age of 93.

She was united in marriage to Rodney Andrews on December 30, 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri, who preceded her in death on August 5, 2002.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, James and Hester Allmon; her husband, Rodney Andrews; one daughter, Linda K. Andrews; one granddaughter, Leatrice Alley; five sisters; four brothers; and one great grandchild.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Tina Massengill of Republic, Missouri, Kenneth Alley and his wife Jaime of Aurora, Missouri, and Terry White of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; one brother, Harold Allmon and his wife Jo; three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; other relatives; and many friends.

After graduating from high school, Opal attended beautician school and received a cosmetology degree. At one time, she owned and operated three beauty shops in St. Louis. Opal later owned and operated a beauty shop on Chestnut Street in downtown Thayer, Missouri.

Opal was a Christian.

She loved to travel. Opal traveled with her husband and other family members. Opal especially liked Colorado and the mountains and the ocean and the beach.

Opal liked game shows. However, what was most important to her was her family.

She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Gaveside services for Opal Irene Andrews will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Cemetery near Alton, Missouri.

Frances Fredrika Howell

Frances Fredrika Howell, 72, West Plains, Missouri died July 1, 2021 at Brooke Haven Health Care in West Plains, Missouri.

She was born the daughter of the late Robert and Elvera Paschke, on May 30, 1949 in Illinois.

She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Wickham, Sedalia, Missouri; three grandchildren, Steven Mead, Marshfield, Missouri, Kristin Hensley, Sedalia, Missouri, and Alyssa Wickham, Sedalia, Missouri; four great grandchildren, Isabella, Brooke, Connor, Mason, and one due in October, Samantha Mae.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Roberta Paschke and one great grandson, Milo. She enjoyed playing bingo at Brooke Haven. She loved her sweet treats, and enjoyed the company of her dog, Paco.

Mary Evelyn Tharp

Graveside services for Mary Evelyn Tharp, 89, West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2021, at Ary Town Cemetery with Brother Bill Bales officiating, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, West Plains.

She was born the daughter of the late Elza Hollis and Edna Mae McElroy Hollis, on August 18, 1931 in Thayer, Missouri and died June 30, 2021 in West Plains, Missouri.

She was united in marriage June 16, 1949 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to Ross Tharp, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son-in-law, Donald Powell, West Plains, Missouri; two grandchildren, Aaron Powell, West Plains, Missouri and Jacquie Tharp, and one brother, Glen Hollis and wife Wanda, Blue Springs, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Jack Tharp and one daughter, Connie Powell; one daughter-in-law, Judy Tharp; two brothers, Leahmon Hollis and Kenneth Hollis.
She attended the Thayer Freewill Baptist Church and Banks Baptist Church in Oregon County, Missouri. She was a hard worker, always had to be working at something. She loved to garden, and loved to can her garden harvest. She also loved to take her vegetables to the Howell County Fair and show them off. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary will lie in state Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, West Plains, Missouri from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Burial will be in Ary town Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains.

Vernon Howell

Carter Funeral Home Thayer

Vernon Emery Howell was born September 13, 1926, in Koshkonong, Missouri, the eldest son of the late Fred Howell and Ada Stanley Howell. He entered into eternal rest on June 29, 2021, at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 16 days.

He was united in marriage on December 25, 1958, to the love of his life, Lavern (Brazeal) Howell, who preceded him in death on August 2, 2016. They celebrated 57 years of marriage and loved each other with a pure and devoted love. He missed Mama every day after she went on to be with the Lord.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Miriam Howell LeGrand; three brothers, Virgil Howell, Van Howell, and Jack Howell; and one sister, Fern Adams.

He is survived by four children: Martha Tuttle, husband Roger, of West Plains; Daniel Howell, wife Tammy, of Thayer; Elisabeth DeShane, husband Kenn, of West Plains; and David Howell, wife Rhonda, of West Plains; six grandchildren: Katelyn Howell; Matt Franks, wife Abby; Chloe Howell; Madelyn DeShane; Dawson Howell; and Caleb DeShane; one sister: Violet Reed; two brothers: Wayne Howell and Paul Howell; many nieces and nephews; former son-in-law, Fred LeGrand; a special friend, Frank Ballard; and a host of loving relatives and friends.

Daddy was a hard-working man and shared memories of working from a very early age; he began plowing behind the horse, using the old-fashioned plows at age five. He helped his Dad and Mom on the farm for many years.

He was drafted into the United States Army during WW II and was stationed at former US Army military base, Fort Presidio, San Francisco, California.

In 1951, he and Mama began a seven year courtship in which Daddy said he wanted to “make sure she loved me.” Mama was patient and laughingly told people that if she hadn’t got him, she’d still be chasing him!

Daddy was a hard worker, who believed in getting up early and starting the day to get things done. He worked at Koshkonong School in various roles for over 50 years. He served as bus driver, custodian, and maintenance staff and is fondly remembered by his willingness to work hard and do his job with thoroughness and integrity. He was also a logger and spent many hours in the logwoods behind a team of mules. He did various jobs to make a living for his family; cut many a “rank of wood” and picked up walnuts by the hundreds of pounds each year.

The one thing that mattered most to Vernon was his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He loved God with a pure and child-like faith. His love for Christ and the Word of God was his driving force, especially in his years of being alone after Lavern’s death. Upon greeting his friends and fellow Christians, he would often ask them, “Do you still love Jesus?” or “Are you still looking for Jesus?” He lived his faith out among people and wanted people to know they were loved by a loving God and by him. He attended church services in many places over the years and loved to worship God in song and hearing the Word of God. He recently celebrated 79 years of knowing Jesus.

Vernon will truly be missed by his family, friends and the community in which he lived.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Shady Oaks Nursing Center in Thayer and Three Rivers Hospice Agency for their loving care and assistance for Vernon during the past three months. He made many friends in his short time there.

Evelyn Ruth Lewis

Evelyn Ruth Lewis, daughter of the late Jessie Johnston and Mary Graham Johnston, was born July 4, 1923, in Ozark County, Missouri, and died June 24, 2021, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 97 years.

She was united in marriage December 16, 1939, in Ozark County, Missouri, to Lee Johnson. She later married Don Lewis.

She is survived by two children, Ronnie Johnson and wife Carolian, West Plains, Missouri, Carolyn (Johnson) Collins and husband Larry, Springfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Shari Perkins, Tracy Johnson and wife Jennifer, Amanda Collins, and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; seven siblings, Lyman Johnston, Lewis Johnston, Emil Johnston, Guy Johnston, Ralph Johnston, May Johnston, and Ella Owsley.

Evelyn spent her early years on Kelley-Wylder Ranch in Ozark County. She helped her husband at times with his iron ore business. Later, she worked 12 years for Baxter Lab of Mountain Home, Arkansas. Most of her life she was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She resided the last twelve years at Magnolia Square in Springfield, Missouri, where she was loved by many of the staff. They soon found out what to expect when she set off the fire alarm, and the fire department showed up. She was affectionately known as a “firecracker.” Evelyn also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She had been a member of the Church of Christ since a young girl and attended Central Church of Christ in West Plains before moving to Springfield.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 29, 2021 from 11:00 to 12:00 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel and graveside services will be held at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
