“Mae” (Underwood) Alford was born the daughter of Frank Lemuel Underwood and Mary Frances (Johnson) Underwood on December 8, 1917, in Oregon County, Missouri, and departed this life January 5, 2015, in West Plains, Missouri, at the age of 97 years.
She was united in marriage on July 3, 1937, in Oregon County, Missouri to Floyd Ray Alford, who preceded her in death on June 28, 2002.
She is survived by her children, Judy Barton and husband, Carl of Clarksville, Tennessee, Mary Kay Oakes of Thayer, Missouri, Don Alford and wife, Nancy of Thayer, Missouri, Ann Hook and husband, Ron of Gainesville, Missouri, and Betty Grooms and husband, Tom of Alton, Missouri; twelve grandchildren, Carla Aaron, Michael Barton, Edwin Barton, Cheryl Cochran, Randal Oakes, Erin Risner, Robyn Massey, Russ Alford, Jason Shepherd, Kari Bowers, Kristi Wade, and Kevin Grooms; thirty two great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one sister, Faye Ivey of Springfield, Missouri; several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ralph Underwood, Sr. and Roy Underwood; and one infant sister, Jennie Underwood.
Mae was a graduate of Thayer High School.
She was a dedicated homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and collecting cookbooks and pretty dishes.
Mae was a Christian lady, who was baptized at an early age and attended Cane Hill Church and Sunday School for many years. Her life was an example of strong character and ethics. She will be remembered for family loyalty, her kind heart and sweet spirit, and will truly be missed by all.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 10:00 AM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Brother Richard Robinson officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, January 9th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer.
Burial will be in the Davis Cemetery at Thayer, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Davis Cemetery, and left at the funeral home.
