Janet Sue Grooms was born the daughter of Milburn C. Strain and Hila Auda (Wales) Strain on February 5, 1951, in Oregon County, Missouri, and departed this life October 27, 2014, at her home in Sparta, Missouri, at the age of 63 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Tonya Summers and husband, Ryan of Sparta, Missouri; two granddaughters, Megan Summers and Baily Summers, both of Sparta, Missouri; one brother, Jerry Strain and wife, Debbie of Thayer, Missouri; two nieces, Kimberly Strain, and Kayla Melton and husband, Derek, all of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; two great nieces, Jacy Melton and Kenzley Melton, both of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Milburn and Hila Strain, and sister-in-law, Sue Strain.
She was a Christian and a member of the Clifton Free Will Baptist Church.
Janet was a graduate of Thayer High School with the class of 1969 and attended Draughon’s Business College in Springfield, Missouri. She began her working career at the Bank of Thayer. Later, she returned to her alma mater, working for the Thayer School District as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper where she retired in 2006 after twenty-eight years of service.
Janet was the high school basketball scorekeeper and statistician and became an avid sports fan. She was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and a great supporter of the Kansas City Royals.
She enjoyed sewing, reading a good book, and being with family. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Brother Gary Mitchener officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer on Saturday from 12:00 Noon until service time.
Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery at Thayer, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital and may be left at the funeral home.
