James Edward Harlan was born the son of John Henry and Helen Ann (Jackson) Harlan on June 2, 1958 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and departed this life October 3, 2012 at his home near Koshkonong, Missouri at the age of 54 years.
He was united in marriage to Penny Verneal Cunningham on January 11, 1979 at Central Ozarks Salebarn in West Plains, Missouri.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Harlan of the home in Koshkonong; two sons, James Adam Harlan and wife, Amber of Thayer, Missouri, and Lucas Ray Harlan and partner, Kim Smith of Koshkonong; two boys that he loved as his own grandsons, Jordan and Christian Smith; his parents, John and Helen Harlan; four brothers, Billy Jackson, Bobby Henson, Dennis Henson and Johnny Harlan; two sisters, Kathy Bentzel and Debbie Schulz; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Harlan.
Jim was an auctioneer and trader of all sorts of things, but especially liked dealing in antiques. He enjoyed woodworking and could build just about anything. He was an avid coon-hunter and fisherman and loved caring for horses.
He was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services for Mr. Harlan will be Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Wayside Cemetery near Koshkonong, Missouri.
The family will receive friends at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

My condolences to all the family. Such a terrible loss and he will be missed. The memories we can cherish forever though. He was a great cousin, who made us laugh so much our sides hurt. Now our hearts are hurting in sadness. But their is comfort all around, by knowing how much family and friends are a very important part of our lives.
