Joe Johnson

Joseph Reece “Joe” Johnson, age 80, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020. He was born March 9, 1940 in Mammoth Spring, a son of Harold and June Smith Johnson. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Mammoth Spring First Baptist Church. He was an employee of Crompton Mills Inc. in Morrilton, AR for 16 years, after which he returned home to Mammoth Spring where he worked at Hilton Farm Supply, the Beverage Shoppe and Ray-Noble Liquor Store until he fully retired in 2018. After retirement, he enjoyed selling furniture and antiques in a shop in downtown Mammoth that he opened with his late wife, Pam.

Joe is survived by his two sons, Tim Johnson and Tony (Tina) Johnson, both of Center Ridge, AR; one step-daughter, Tosha Owens-Clark of Gulfport, MS; three sisters, Pat Hilton of Thayer, MO, Shirley Garner and Sherrie Keylon both of Mammoth Spring; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Rehm, Josh Johnson, Brianna (Andy) Beck, Ryan (Kelsey) Johnson, Alexa (Dwayne) Medlock, Joey (Jessica) Patten, Robert (Brittney) Patten, and Garrett Charlton; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; and friends that were like family.

Along with his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Sherrell Johnson; one sister, Peggy A. Edwards; one brother, Jack Johnson; one nephew, Kelly Keylon; one daughter-in-law, Donna Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Joe M. Hilton and David P. Garner.

He will be missed by his family and all that knew him.

A private family service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas with Brother Charles Morgan officiating. Joe’s grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

Jack Johnson

Carter Funeral Home Thayer

Jack Dean Johnson was born the son of the late Harold Willis Johnson and Mary June (Smith) Johnson, on May 24, 1945, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, and departed this world on Monday, September 21, 2020, in his hometown, at the age of 75.

He was united in marriage on August 24, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Mary Nanette (Edwards) Crighton. From that marriage he is survived by his children, Dane Johnson, and wife Delica, of Thayer, Missouri, and daughter Sarah Johnson of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Ella Johnson, Rowan Johnson, and Archer Johnson, all of Thayer; three sisters, Pat Hilton of Thayer, and Shirley Garner and Sherrie Keylon, of Mammoth Spring; one brother, Joe Johnson, who has since passed; six nieces and nephews, 18 great nieces and nephews, and 19 great-great nieces and nephews; many cousins; other relatives and an endless number of friends who were like family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Peggy A. Edwards; one nephew, Kelly Keylon; brothers-in-law, Joe M. Hilton and David P. Garner; and sister-in-law, Pam Johnson.

He proudly served his country as a Hospitalman Third Class of the United States Navy being designated Corpsman of Marine Aircraft Group 36 from 1963 to 1967, 13 months of which were spent in the Vietnam War. There he received the high honors of a Purple Heart, Aircrew Badge, Air Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After completing his time in the military, Jack attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1974. He continued his service, now as a pharmacist, at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.

Jack experienced great strength in family. From spending time with his children, to bonding closely with his grandchildren, he was happiest when he was with those he loved. Sunday lunches were an essential part of his week giving him time to catch up with his siblings. Outside of family, he loved spending his days on the river and visiting the California or Florida beaches when occasion permitted.

He found pleasure in his many years serving the community as a pharmacist; getting to know his patients was his favorite part. As those who were familiar with him would attest, once Jack was in your life, he stayed forever. He was always there to lend an ear, offer a word of encouragement, and took a deep interest in others’ lives. He will be fondly remembered for the love and life he shared.

Bobby L. Harrell

Bobby L. Harrell was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ernest Harrell and Lula Mae Haas Harrell on January 8, 1942 and departed this life on September 11, 2020 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas, at the age of 78 years.

He was united in marriage to Charlotte Harrell on March 29, 1973 in Campbell, Texas, who preceded him in death.

Bobby is survived by one son, Patrick S. Harrell and wife, Debbie of Pottersville, Missouri; one step-son, Jonathan Curtis of McKinney, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Freddy Harrell and wife, Bennie; one sister, Sharron Chaney and husband, Paul; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Harrell and Lula Mae Allen; and his wife, Charlotte Harrell.

Bobby was a Christian and baptized in the Church of Christ.

After graduating from Alton High School, he joined the U.S. Navy, and faithfully served his country four years. Following his active service, he served and then retired from the Army Reserve.

After his military service, he worked as a maintenance man, and retired from that position at Texas A&M University. He also was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying.

While in Texas, Bobby was raised to the degree of Master Mason by Bethel Lodge No. 134.

Bobby loved his family, especially being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will truly be missed by all that knew him.

Graveside services for Bobby L. Harrell will be held on Monday, September 14, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Thayer Cemetery in Thayer, Missouri with Pastor Andy Hanson officiating.

Burial will be in Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.

Olen Edward Russell

Olen Edward Russell was born on September 6, 1921 in Oregon County, Missouri, the son of Clarence Edward Russell and Edith Risner Russell and departed this life on September 7, 2020 at Shady Oaks Healthcare Center in Thayer, Missouri, at the age of 99 years and one day.

He is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann Head and her husband, Rodger of Springfield; two brothers, Bill Russell and his wife, Marie of Thayer, Missouri, and Phillip Russell of Kansas City, Missouri; two step-grandchildren, Derick Head and his wife, Sharon of Sullivan, Missouri and Eraka Kimker and her husband, Steve of Bourbon, Missouri; three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; many cousins; other relatives; and countless friends.

Olen was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edith Russell; his wife, Euda Russell; one sister, Verneal Laster; and two brothers, Jim Russell and Bob Russell.

He was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.

Olen was a World War II veteran, joining the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and New Guinea. In the Army Olen was a heavy equipment operator, clearing and building air strips. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After his service, he worked in the lumber industry in Colorado and the wheat harvest in Kansas. Olen also continued operating a dozer, working on Highway 63, and building many ponds around the area.

In 1949 Olen married Euda Wales Griffin. Along with Euda he started milking cows and later started raising beef cattle. Olen and Euda were awarded two Oregon County Farm honors and he received a certificate for twenty-five year of county service.

Olen enjoyed telling about his time in the service and playing tricks on friends. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, looking for arrow heads, and working on his farm. He was always willing to help any one and a friend to all.

Most of all, he loved his family and friends. He will truly be missed by his family and all that knew him.

Lavon Callahan

Edgar Lavon Callahan was born in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, the son of Dollie Callahan and Lora Banks Callahan on December 5, 1939 and departed this life on September 4, 2020 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas, at the age of 80 years.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn L. Flynn on November 22, 1956 in Kahoka, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Callahan of the home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; one daughter, Linda Humphrey and her husband, Bobby of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; one son, Donnie Callahan and his wife, Cindy of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Terry Humphrey and his wife, Jennifer, Kristy Blue and her husband, Jordan, and Stacey Jones and her husband, Jeremy; five great grandchildren; one son-in-law, Richard Sadler; one brother, Chuck Callahan and his wife, Sharon; two sisters, Regina Rakoczy and her husband, Wally and Donna Fraley and her husband, Jim; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; special family, Judy Smith, James Reed, Tom Smith and his wife, Jay and Warren Dolphus; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dollie and Lora Callahan; and two children, Ronald Callahan and Roberta Sadler.

Lavon was a Christian and a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

Lavon, with his wife Kathryn, manufactured Rebel camper shells for many years.

He was a member and team leader of the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief Arkansas. He also was very involved with Shining Light Food Pantry in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and the Thayer Food Pantry in Thayer, Missouri

He will truly be missed by his family and all that knew him.

Mary Katherine Crawford

On Thursday, August 28, 2020, Mary Katherine White Crawford, loving friend and mother of four passed away at her home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas at the age of 64.

Kathy was born on June 19, 1956 in West Memphis, Arkansas to Lee White and Irene Curtis White.

She is survived by two children, Keith Crawford and his wife, Jill and Krystal Graves and her husband, Chris; six grandchildren, Vivian Crawford, Wyatt Crawford, Kaleb Crawford, Krysta Crawford, Chevelle Graves and Tristen Graves; three aunts, Estell Cox, Lynn Reynolds and Nell Welch; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

Kathy was proceeded in death by her parents, Lee and Irene White; two children, Kenneth Melton and LaTeresa Crawford; and three sisters, Earlene Love, Nancy Bowden and Shirley White.

She was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.

Kathy loved to fish, play bingo and sing karaoke. She also enjoyed cooking. She cooked at the Country Cottage in Thayer, Missouri for over fifteen years. Boy, she was the best cook.

In her later years, she loved to watch her grandkids play sports. Kathy really loved baseball and softball season and she learned to love basketball.

Kathy loved her all her family, but her greatest love was definitely her grandkids.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and a friend to all. She will truly be missed by all that knew her.

Ralph E. Scogin

On Monday, August 24, 2020, Ralph Edwin Scogin passed away peacefully at his home in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 69. While we are deeply saddened to lose him in this life, we are thankful he laid down to rest on earth, and woke up in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ralph was a pastor and dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel and serving others continually. He was a loving and nurturing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, great grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed by many. To know him was to be blessed by him. His children and grandchildren brought him great joy in this life. He truly cherished all of the precious memories he had with family.

Ralph was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Hoy-Scogin; his father, Emory Scogin; his sister, Opal Scogin;and his son, Daniel Ray Scogin.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Cheryl Ann Scogin; his daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Bottarel (Francis), Bethany Lynne Jasper (Steve), Kimberly Joy Poulette (Garrett) and Carrie Sue Scogin-Wiggs (Nicholas); eighteen grandchildren, Carissa, Brianna, Devon, Chandler, Aaron and Andrew (Bethany), Lexi, Levi, Bella, Brandon, Karla, Byron and Berta (Kimberly), Hannah and Nathaniel (Sarah), Zane, Lainey, Tristan, Ava June and Jude (Carrie); two great grandchildren, Ezra (Devon) and Lucas (Aaron); one sister-in-law, Bonnie Hilbert; two sisters, Jan Rodgers (Fred) and Elva Cox (Tom); two brothers, Arnold Scogin and Allen Scogin; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and countless friends.

Ralph served for many years as a pastor for the Koshkonong Assembly of God. Before moving to Missouri, he was the pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Owensville Indiana. He was the current pastor of Grand Gulf Shiloh Church in Thayer, Missouri. By trade, he worked in industrial and electrical maintenance. He spent many years teaching at ITT Technical Institute. He was also a landlord and very skilled in being the “fixer of all things” for his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, coin collecting and being a servant of Christ to the community. He will truly be missed by his family, friends and the community in which he lived.

Lillian D. Thompson

Lillian Dovie (McGhee) Thompson was born November 17, 1923 in Myrtle, Missouri, the daughter of Wess McGhee and Minnie Rutledge McGhee and departed this life on August 29, 2020 in Farmington, Missouri, at the age of 96 years and 10 months.

She was united in marriage to Paul Eugene Thompson on December 19, 1942. To this union six children were born: Gene (G.W.) Thompson and his wife, Debbie of Wentzville, Missouri, Dwight Thompson and his wife, Brenda of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Marsheila Gast and husband, Keith of Columbia, Missouri, Charline Rau and husband, Pete of Farmington, Missouri, Detra House of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Pat Hall of Pocahontas, Arkansas. Lillian was also survived by two sisters, Vada Foster of Biggers, Arkansas and June Cole of Clinton, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; thirty great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and countless friends.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Wess and Minnie McGhee; her husband, Paul Thompson; her son, James Lenord (J.L.) Thompson; two brothers, Truman McGhee and Charlie McGhee; one sister, Pearl McGhee; one daughter-in-law, Sue Thompson; one grandson, Paul Scott Crane; two granddaughters, Valarie Johnson and Cathy Thompson; and two sons-in-law, Frank House and James Martin.

She was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.

Lillian worked at the Thayer garment factory as a seamstress. She worked at the Couch School as a custodian. She also worked at the Alton Senior Citizen’s Center. However, she was primarily a homemaker.

Later, she enjoyed going to the Thayer Senior Citizen’s Center to visit with friends.

She will truly be missed by her family and all that knew her.

Dianna Lynn Blanchard

Dianna Lynn Blanchard was born in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Norman Lee Tunney and Joe Ann Giovanardi Tunney on September 15, 1959 and departed this life on August 26, 2020 in Cherokee Village, Arkansas at the age of 60 years.

She was united in marriage to Alan Dean Blanchard on October 25, 1986 in Jonesboro, Georgia.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Alan Blanchard of the home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; one daughter, Kayla Blanchard of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; Three sisters, Debbie Johnson, Sue McTheny and Dorothy Halliday; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Joe Ann Tunney; and one brother, Donald Tunney.

Lynn was a Christian and a member of Mammoth Spring First Baptist Church in Mammoth Soring, Arkansas.

She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in Dover, Delaware and obtained her LPN degree at Delaware Technical College. She worked as an LPN for over 30 years.

Lynn liked to read and fish. She loved music, especially gospel music. She always had a sweet disposition.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife and mother and a friend to all. She will truly be missed by all that knew her.

Phillip D. Caldwell

Phillip D. Caldwell was born on March 31, 1938 in Billmore, Missouri, the son of Paul Caldwell and Mae Mills Caldwell and departed this life on August 21, 2020 at his home in West Plains, Missouri, at the age of 82 years.

He is survived by one son, Greg Siekawitch and his wife, Angie; one brother, Joe Dan Caldwell; one sister, Ledith Mothersill; seven grandchildren; two nephews, Roger Taylor and Mark Taylor and wife, Andrea; one niece, Ashley Caldwell; good friend, Evelyn Kelsey; other relatives; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mae Caldwell.

In late 50’s Phillip left home and joined the U.S. Army. He served his entire enlistment in Hawaii. When he got out of the Army, he started a career as a heavy equipment operator. In the early 60’s, he ended up in Alaska paving connecting highways from one end to the other.

While in Alaska, he got an upclose look at his first gold nugget. He found his new hobby, prospecting for gold. In the 70’s he was involved in the Alaska oil pipeline from day 1 to day end. He retired as a heavy equipment operator in the late 70’s and went to gemology and jewelry design school. Phillip helped a friend design and build jewelry. Phillip leaves behind a very dear and long-term friend in Alaska who he shared most of his prospecting days and journey’s with, John Pulling and many others

He then returned to Missouri to settle down and be closer to his family and meet many new dear friends. In Missouri, Phillip liked to hunt and fish. He also loved to search with his metal detector, remembering his days as a gold prospector.
