Thayer

Ronald Dean Stieben was born the son of Edwin Stieben and Velma (Bell) Stieben on July 7, 1944 in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and departed this life April 3, 2013 at his home in Couch, Missouri at the age of 68 years.

He was united in marriage on September 19, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois to Sandra Schultz.     

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Stieben of the home; one daughter, Deanna Peterson and husband, Patrick; two sons, Ronald Stieben, Jr., and Michael Stieben; three grandchildren, Jereme and Marissa Peterson and Michael Stieben, Jr.; his mother, Velma Stieben; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Stieben.

Before his retirement, Ron was employed as a police officer in Chicago, Illinois and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; spending time with his family, being outdoors on his farm with his horses and dogs, his guns, his old Mustang car, and treasured visits with his friends.

Some of Ron’s many hobbies were woodworking, leather work, collecting knives, coins, beautiful glassware, and attending auctions.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving dad and grandpa and a loyal friend.  Ron will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri on Monday evening, April 8th, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.  Brother Jake Lawrence will offer a eulogy at 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and may be left at the Funeral Home. 

Rosa May Hatfield was born the daughter of Joshua Hayes and Mattie Ann (Rogers) Hayes on September 13, 1911 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, and departed this life April 2, 2013 in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 101 years.

She was united in marriage on February 12, 1933 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to Robert E. Hatfield, who preceded her in death on May 8, 1992.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, her church family and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joshua and Mattie Ann Hayes; her husband, Robert Hatfield; one infant daughter, Rose Bernice Hatfield; eight brothers, Jim, R.V., Everett, Oscar, Woodrow, George, Pershing and Eugeno Hayes and two sisters, Flora Williamson and Mattie Mae Whiteside.

Rosa was called into the ministry in the early 1930’s. She pastored and filled in for seven different churches throughout the years, but her home church was the Midway Pentecostal in Thayer, where she was a faithful member, attending as long as health permitted. Rosa was also the director of the Midway Church Services held monthly at Shady Oaks Healthcare.

She will be remembered as a lady with a kind heart and a sweet Christian spirit. Mrs. Hatfield was a faithful minister of God’s word and a wonderful witness, always reaching out to the lost. She was devoted to the Lord, her church, family, and friends. She will truly be missed by all.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hatfield will be Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Midway Pentecostal Church in Thayer, Missouri with Brother Anthony Woods and Brother Charles Barnett officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home in Thayer on Friday evening, April 5th, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Burial will be in the Field Creek Cemetery near Mammoth Spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Midway Pentecostal Church and may be left at the Funeral Home.

William “Bub” Edwards, Jr. was born the son of William Harold Edwards, Sr. and Edna Ellen (Casey) Edwards on March 10, 1943 in Riverton, Missouri, and departed this life April 1, 2013 at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri at the age of 70 years.

He was united in marriage on June 12, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois to Suzanne Williams.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Edwards of the home in Cabool, Missouri; one son, Michael William Edwards and wife, Miranda of Colcord, Oklahoma; one daughter, Elizabeth Coppinger and husband, Stephen of Edgar Springs, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jordyn Edwards, Jedidiah William Edwards, Eden Edwards, Hunter, and Conor William Coppinger; two sisters, Rita Fairfax and husband, Jim of Sedalia, Missouri and Sherry Edwards of Thayer, Missouri; nephew, Brad Jones of Sedalia, Missouri; niece, Hope Edwards of Platte City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Edwards.

Bub was a 1961 graduate of Thayer High School; a graduate from College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri, and attended Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam in the 406^th Mobile Lab Unit.

Bub was an OSP Engineer for various telephone companies and corporations for several years.

He enjoyed restoring old cars, was a member of the Southern Cruiser’s Car Club, and won major awards with his collection. Bub was President and CEO of Ol’ Buzzard Hot Rod Shop in Cabool.

He was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered as a deeply devoted husband, father, PawPaw, brother, and loyal friend. He will truly be missed by all.

Funeral services for Mr. Edwards will be Friday, April 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri with Brother Edward Casey officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home in Thayer, Thursday evening, April 4, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery in Thayer with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

James Willard Friel was born the son of James S. Friel and Ethel J. (Kirk) Friel on March 21, 1928 in Portageville, Missouri, and departed this life March 29, 2013 in Thayer, Missouri at the age of 85 years.

He was united in marriage on March 30, 1948 in Piggott, Arkansas to Dolly Cheek.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly of Thayer, Missouri; five children, Margaret Cochran of Agnos, Arkansas, Jerry Friel and wife, Velda of Alma, Arkansas, Sharon Miller and husband, James of Muldrow, Oklahoma, Elizabeth Smith and husband, Howard of West Plains, Missouri and Mary Morris and husband, Chris of Broadway, Virginia; nineteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Friel and five sisters, Marie Spoor, Ruby Friel, Naomi Hughey, Almeda Bowman and Edith Weaver.

Mr. Friel was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was employed by American Can Company in St. Louis, Missouri for fifteen years and was later employed by Garnett Wood Products in Koshkonong, Missouri for several years.

Mr. Friel was a Christian and attended Shekinah Tabernacle. He enjoyed small engine repair and attending auctions.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will truly be missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer, Missouri with Brother Marty McComas officiating. Visitation will be Monday, April 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

Anthony Paul Bamber, Sr. was born the son of Leo Paul Bamber and Flora Lee (Hutchinson) Bamber on July 17, 1934 at Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and departed this life March 22, 2013 at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 78 years.

He was united in marriage August 20, 1953 at Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to Betty Crass.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bamber of the home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; two sons, Anthony Bamber, Jr. of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and Roger Lee Bamber and wife, Deborah of West Plains, Missouri; one daughter, Charlotte Kay Chouinard and husband, David of North Ridgeville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Joshuah Fisher, Sarah Fisher, David Bamber, Thomas Bamber, Rachel “Moon” Bamber, Melissa Ellis, Anthony “AJ” Bamber, Kelly Bamber and Karie Bamber; several great grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Harrell of Brooksville, Florida; several nieces and nephews and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Flora Lee Bamber; one brother, Billy Bamber and three sisters, Pernia Gwaltney, Grace Mooney, and Ardith Harrell.

Mr. Bamber was a Veteran of the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

He was a truck driver, owning and operating his own trucking firm.  Tony enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing, and antique shopping.  He was very active in the Thayer Fun and Friends Senior Citizens Group.

He was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.  He will be remembered by his family as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and a loyal friend.  He will truly be missed by all.

Funeral services for Mr. Bamber will be Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri with Reverend Gerald Bounds officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home in Thayer, Monday evening, March 25, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

Philip Joseph Gantner, Jr. was born the son of Philip Joseph Gantner, Sr. and Margaret Lillian (Wright) Gantner on September 2, 1937 in Fayette, Missouri, and departed this life March 19, 2013 at his home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas at the age of 75 years.

He was united in marriage on February 3, 1981 in Humble, Texas, to Barbara Kibby.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gantner of the home in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; Crystal Beck and husband, Don of Charleston, South Carolina; one grandson, Joesph Olliff; one great grandson, Joseph Michael Olliff; one brother, William Edward Gantner and wife, Julie of Roundup, Montana; one sister, Mary Jane Bittle and husband, Delmar of Hemet, California; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret Ann Baldwin.

Philip was Salutatorian of his high school graduation class in Fayette, Missouri. He was a former surveyor with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. After moving to Mammoth Spring, he and his wife, Barbara, owned and operated the Mammoth Spring Auction and Ozark Heritage Mall for several years. He was a former member of the Mammoth Spring Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed participating in the Solemn O’Judge Day plays and assisted with the Spring Fling Bed Race. Being a natural actor, he was in many of the productions presented by the Repertory Theater of the Ozarks.

Philip served in the Army National Guard. He loved his flower garden, growing vegetables and wood working.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will truly be missed by all.

David Lloyd Crews was born the son of Jonathan Lloyd and Ruby Lucille (Johnson) Crews on October 24, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri, and departed this life March 14, 2013, in Ripley County, Missouri at the age of 63 years.

He was united in marriage August 16, 1969 at Centerpoint Church of God of Prophecy in Myrtle, Missouri to Sandra Whittenburg.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Crews of the home in Couch, Missouri; two sons, Michael Crews and wife, Pam of Alton, Missouri and Jeffrey Crews of Rolla, Missouri; three grandchildren, Timothy and Taylor Crews of Alton, Missouri and Isabel Crews of Rolla Missouri; mother-in-law, Alice Whittenburg of Couch, Missouri; uncle, Lee Crews of Crestwood, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonathan and Ruby Crews; Myles and Beulah Dethrow and Hubert Whittenburg.

David will be remembered as a businessman and leader in his community.  He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1972.  He was employed by Eaton Corporation for several years and was former president of the West Plains Rotary Club.  David, along with his wife, Sandy, owned the Thayer Dairy Queen from 1990 to 1996.  He was active in numerous organizations including Missouri Farm Bureau and Oregon County Extension Council.  He also served as Republican Committeeman for the Jobe precinct.

David was a prominent farmer in the area.  He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends, life on the farm, deer hunting, and cooking for church dinners and family gatherings.  He especially enjoyed making deer jerky for his grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.

He was a dedicated Christian, a Gideon and an active member of Centerpoint Church of God of Prophecy in Myrtle.  In 1995, he was baptized in Fredrick Creek on his own property.  

David will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.  He will be truly missed by his family, many friends and the community in which he lived.

Funeral Services will be Sunday, March 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer, Missouri with Brother Jake Lawrence, Brother Charles Trantham and, Brother Russell Hensley officiating. 

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home in Thayer on Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Burial will be in the Cotton Creek Cemetery, with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons or Centerpoint Church of God of Prophecy Building Fund, and may be left at the funeral home. 

Henry Jo Hefner Adams was born the daughter of Will Trimble and Virginia (Brewer) Trimble on January 28, 1918 at Billmore, Missouri and departed this life March 14, 2013 at the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Missouri at the age of 95 years.

In October of 1935, she was united in marriage to Dewey Waldo Hefner, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1970. In September of 1972, she was united in marriage to J.A. “Bo” Adams, who preceded her in death on October 14, 1991.

She is survived by one daughter, Ann Hefner Barton and husband, Bill of Carmichael, California; six grandchildren, Patrick Hefner and wife, Sue of Cabool, Missouri, Julie Carr and husband, Robert of Adrian, Missouri, Kelly Slayton and husband, Jake of Mountain Grove, Missouri, Doug Barton of Carmichael, California, Jeff Barton and wife, Stacey of Monterey, California and Sara Yanowsky and husband, Vince of Sacramento, California; four step-grandchildren, Cindy Crossland of Monett, Missouri, Mark Crossland of Monett, Missouri, Mike Gleghorn of Jonesboro, Arkansas and BoLinda Gleghorn of West Plains, Missouri; thirteen great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Virginia Trimble; her husbands; one son, Eddie Bill Hefner; one great grandson, Adam Hefner; two step-daughters, BoAnn Gleghorn and Betty Crossland, and ten brothers and sisters.

Jo worked as a beauty operator in the Thayer area for several years. She loved to play bridge, was an excellent cook and an avid reader.

She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Thayer. She will be remembered by her family as a loving and caring mother and grandmother, and will truly be missed by all.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Brother Gerald Bounds officiating. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Saturday from 1:00 PM until service time. Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus or the Thayer First Baptist Church Fund.

Arthur Cotham was born the son of Marvin Cotham and Dora Bell (Henson) Cotham on August 30, 1924 in Oregon County, Missouri, and departed this life March 11, 2013 at Hunter Acres Caring Center in Sikeston, Missouri at the age of 88 years.

He is survived by two brothers, Melvin Cotham of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Marvin Cotham and wife, Nina of Rockville, Indiana; four sisters, Irene Childers of Thayer, Missouri, Essie Abbott of Thayer, Missouri, Betty McCameron of Lenoir City, Indiana and Mildred Bartholomee of Thayer, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eleven brothers and sisters.

He was a member of the Church of Christ and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral Services for Mr. Cotham will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer, Missouri, with Erman Croney officiating. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1:30 until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Jeff Cemetery near Thayer.

Arlene Ethel (Ferbert) Walters was born the daughter of John B. Ferhert and Ethel (Loud) Ferbert on January 22, 1927 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and departed this life March 9, 2013 at the Colonial Home in Doniphan, Missouri at the age of 86 years.

She was united in marriage on March 7, 1976 at Pittsburg, Kansas to Everett Walters, who preceded her in death on November 2, 1990.

She is survived by one brother, Johnnie Ferbert of Hudson, New Hampshire; several step-children; a host of nieces and nephews; and her family and friends at Colonial Home in Doniphan, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel Ferbert; her loving and caring husband, Everett Walters; six brothers and two sisters.

Arlene worked as a caregiver in area nursing homes. She enjoyed playing musical instruments, listening to music, birds singing and writing family history. She liked all animals, especially dogs and cats, but most of all, she loved her Colonial Home.

She was a Christian and will be remembered as a kind, loving and caring lady. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Graveside Services for Mrs. Walters will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 13, 2013 in the Bailey Cemetery near Alton, Missouri.
