Ruth Almeda Thompson

Ruth Almeda Thompson, daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth Holmes was born April 29, 1928 in Alton, MO and departed this life July 8, 2020 at the age of 92.

She was united in marriage June 19, 1946 to C. R. (Shorty) Thompson who preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Ruthene Simpson, sister Dorothy Hodge, and brother Herman Holmes.

She is survived by her children Richard Thompson and wife, Marcia, Deanne Lunyou and husband, Wayne, Dennis Thompson and wife, Susan, Kevin Thompson and wife, Janella, Kara Painter and husband, Walter. Thirteen grandchildren: Sean, Jason, Clint, Chad, Clay and Nathaniel Thompson. Ben Lunyou  Amanda Simpson, Whitney Kratzberg, Kalea Hughes,  Hannah Ogden, Kendra Painter, and Kelbi Coleman.  Also surviving her are fourteen great grandchildren, one sister, Edna Faye Pierce and husband Donald, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Ruth lived in Alton, MO on a farm with her parents until 1946 when she married the love of her life, Shorty.  When they were married, they traveled up and down on the East Coast and Midwest while Shorty did his excavation work.  Ruth described this time of her life as hard work but fun as they made many friends.  When they had their fourth child, they moved back to a farm across from her parents where they spent the greater part of their lives farming and raising their children.

Ruth loved to can and freeze the foods she raised in their garden.  Her jelly was a topic of conversation as she loved the color and clarity of each one.  She also made a special freezer corn that could not be duplicated.  She sewed, knitted and crocheted but her favorite past time was making quilts.  Her first quilt was designed and made when she was four years old.  She designed other quilts, as well, and it could easily be said that she made as many as 1000 quilts and/or lap throws.  Most of her quilts were scrap quilts but some were designed with material she would select and put together. 

Ruth loved church activities, gospel hymns, and old-time singings at church.  One of her favorite things to do would be to gather her children and their families, squeeze together in whatever space she had and sing and play instruments.  She was a superb hostess and cook.   Going to her house for a meal was a special treat.

She will be loved forever by all who knew her and our loss, is truly Heaven’s gain. 

Funeral services for Ruth Almeda Thompson, age 92, of Alton, Missouri will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2020, at 2:30 PM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri with Brother Jason Roberts officiating.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 to service time at the Carter Funeral Home in Thayer, Missouri.

Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery near Alton, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.
