Hurley Cowen, 80, the son of William Erwin and Nannie Mae Cowen, was born on November 17, 1936 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. He departed this life on November 25, 2016 in Salem, Arkansas.

Hurley is survived by his wife, Marion Cowen of Fryatt, Arkansas; son, Randy (Stacey) Cowen of Koshkonong, Missouri; and daughter, Shelley Carter of Mountain Home, Arkansas; sister, Carol McCord of Winfield, Missouri; three stepchildren – David Pearce of Overland Park, Kansas, Thomas Pearce of Mariposa, California, and Kate Pearce of Stilwell, Kansas; stepsister, Hasseltine Coats; and stepbrother, Larry Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Joyce Cowen; two daughters, Linda Collins and Karen Cowen; one stepson, Chris Pearce; one sister, Jackie Martin; and one stepsister, Arlene Bishop.

Prior to retirement, Hurley was a builder, cabinet maker and remodeler of homes. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in Thayer, Missouri.

Among many of his hobbies, Hurley most loved to play his Gibson guitar and study astronomy. He also spent countless hours working, relaxing and fishing at his beloved pond on the property in Fryatt. He was naturally curious with a sly sense of humor, which made him that unique person who would share the beauty of the universe through a telescope with you, while at the same time entertain you with song or simply be that person you could laugh with while watching Bugs Bunny.

He will be greatly missed by many friends and family.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Fryatt Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas with Erman Croney officiating.

Burial will be in Fryatt Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home in Thayer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society
