Hazel Edna (Brazeal) Ray was born the daughter of Leamon Franklin Brazeal and Jessie Elma (Phipps) Brazeal on July 27, 1923, in  Koshkonong, Missouri, and departed this life January 20, 2013, at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains, Missouri, at the age of 89 years.

She was united in marriage November 29, 1941, in Kennett, Missouri, to James Edward Ray, Sr., who preceded her in death on July 4, 2006.

She is survived by one son, James Ray and wife, Ranette, of Lanton, Missouri; one daughter, Elma Wilson and husband, Robert, of Brandsville, Missouri; six grandchildren, Tammy Evetts and husband, Tony, Phyllis Cunningham and husband, Eric, Robby Wilson and wife, Jennifer, Tracy Wilson and wife, Squeekie, Amy Weisbrod and husband, Wyatt, and Kristy Ray; sixteen great-grandchildren; seventeen great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Brazeal of Pineville, Missouri and George Brazeal of Pineville, Missouri; three sisters, Marie Howell of Koshkonong, Missouri, Laverne Smith of Pineville, Missouri and Ruby Cooley of Rogers, Arkansas; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Brazeal and Mary McMemeny; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leamon and Jessie Brazeal; her husband, James Ray; one brother, Tracy Brazeal; two sisters, Jessie Mae Madden and Audrey Lucille Daniels and one great grandchild, Chase Weisbrod.

Hazel was employed by the Koshkonong School District, working as a cook in the cafeteria for several years.

She was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed needlework, especially quilting, creating numerous heirlooms for her family.

Mrs. Ray was of the Baptist faith.  She will be remembered as a Christian lady with a kind heart, a loving spirit, and a deep devotion to her family.  She will truly be missed by her family and the community in which she lived.

Funeral services for Hazel Ray, age 89, of Brandsville, Missouri, will be Friday, January 25, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel at Thayer with Reverend James Ray officiating.

The body will lie in state Thursday from 8:00 AM until time of the service.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Walker Cemetery near Thayer with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home in Thayer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons International and left at the funeral home.
