Edith Dolores (Fischer) Strain was born the daughter of John B. Fischer and Hazel (Harrison) Fischer on October 25, 1918 in Belleville, Illinois, and departed this life October 25, 2013, at Shady Oaks Healthcare in Thayer, Missouri, at the age of 95 years.
She was united in marriage on November 14, 1944, in Geneva, Nebraska, to James Robert Strain who preceded her in death on April 22, 1996.
She is survived by two sisters, Janet Smith of Vinton, Virginia, and Joan Veath of Belleville, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Daphene Gordon of Fielding, Utah; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hazel Fischer; her husband, James Robert Strain; one brother, James W. Fischer; and five sisters, Martha Ehret, Mary Howard, Ethel Fischer, Valeda Koderhandt and Harriet Fehlker.
Edith was a charter member of the Couch Methodist Church, and a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed quilting and needlework, and was employed by Puritan Fashions garment factory in Thayer, Missouri, for many years, working as floor supervisor.
She will be remembered as a loving sister, a caring aunt, and will truly be missed.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Strain will be Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Jeannette Bragg officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home in Thayer on Saturday, November 2nd from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
Burial will be in the Thayer Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Couch Community Church, St. Jude’s Chidren’s Research Hospital, or the Gideons and may be left at the Funeral Home.

Aunt Sis, the journey was long but you are finally home. You had a loving hunsband of 51 years. You and your sisters had an extraordinary friendship. Always a lady and always a gracious hostess. On behalf of your nieces and nephews, thank you for being such a special aunt to all of us. We will always love you and hold dear the memories in our hearts of times spent with you and Uncle Bob on the farm. You are already missed….
