Dorothy Manker

Dorothy Mae Manker was born the daughter of Martin Luther Hertzler and Lovie Schlotterbach Hertzler on December 15, 1914 in Thayer, Missouri and departed this life August 31, 2012 at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains, Missouri at the age of 97 years.

She was united in marriage on December 24, 1932 to Edward Manker.

She is survived by three children, Lovie Guffey of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, William “Bud” Manker and wife, Joan of Thayer, Missouri and Rosa Hudson of Thayer, Missouri; seventeen grandchildren; twenty eight great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosa Lee Nelson of Ozark, Missouri and Hazel Faye Ellis of Springfield, Missouri; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Lovie Hertzler; one son, Edward Manker, Jr.; two infant daughters; one grandson, Jamie Manker; one brother, Julius Hertzler and four sisters, Stella Hooper, Mary Rogers, Ruth Rico and Jo Parnell.

She was saved at the age of sixteen in the Rose Hill Baptist Church of which she became an active and faithful member for the remainder of her life. She served as Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk and Treasurer for many years. She was an excellent seamstress and was employed by Rice Stix Garment Factory for many years and was President of the OWLS Club.

She became active in 4-H at an early age and was State Health Champion in Missouri at the age of fourteen years and later served as 4-H leader for many years.

Dorothy was active in Thayer Fun and Friends and enjoyed participating in Senior Olympic Games, where she received numerous awards. She was an avid bowler until the age of ninety-four. She was a member of the local garden club and enjoyed gardening, growing and preserving fruits and vegetables for future use.

She will be remembered by her family as a devoted, loving and caring person and by her community as a leader and supporter of all worth-while charities.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Manker will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Monday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Davis Cemetery, East of Thayer.

    So sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful neat person. She and my mom worked together at the “Dress” factory. I’ve known her all my life, just sad but was a pleasure knowing her friendship. Prayers for all her family.

    My thoughts go out to all of the Manker family. I did not know Dorothy for long but cherished what little time I spent with her. I appreciated her love for nature and greatly enjoyed all her stories. She will be missed.
