Lanis Glendal Nicholson

Lanis Glendal Nicholson was born to Luther Jackson Nicholson and Beatrice Elizabeth (Humphrey) Nicholson on July 8, 1947, and departed to his eternal home September 11, 2024.

On June 13, 1970, he married Brenda Diles within this union, two children were born; son, Dennis Wade, and daughter, Amy Denys.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years; one son Dennis Nicholson (Andrea); one daughter Amy Toomey (Brian); four grandchildren Tyler Smith (Chesney), Tessa Smith, Dalton Nicholson, and Carter Nicholson; one sister Janice Ballard (Frank); two sisters-in-law Barbara Nicholson and Betty Diles Fitchett; one uncle Avery Humphrey; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother James Nicholson.

Lanis was a master carpenter for many years. He was also a cattle and hog farmer, industrial sprinkler fitter, and employed at JC Manufacturing for several years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a Christian and member of the Mammoth Spring church of Christ for many years.

Lanis was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

Funeral services for Lanis Nicholson, age 77, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Missouri. Visitation will be Sunday, September 15, 2024, 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2p.m.

Interment will be on Sunday, September 15, 2024, in Thayer Cemetery, Thayer, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in Thayer, Missouri.

Joe Anne Stewart

Joe Anne Stewart was born on July 9, 1939, in Corning, Arkansas. She left her earthly home on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, at the age of 85. She was a loving mother, nana, and dear friend to many.

Joe Anne had a servant’s heart first and foremost to the Lord and always put the needs of others before her own. She was a member of Thayer First Baptist Church for 66 years. Some of her most enjoyable times were spent in fellowship with her Sunday School class.

She was a well-known seamstress not only for her family but also her community for over 50 years. Active for many years, Joe could often be found on the Thayer Golf Course, at the tennis courts, or taking daily walks with her closest friends.

Joe Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Bill Stewart, her parents, one brother, Fred, and her grandparents, Bill and Hessie Harbison.

She is survived by her daughter Pam Willett (Thadnel) and son Trey Stewart (Malinda), six grandchildren, Whitney Scribner (Casey), Leslie Underwood (Logan), Jason Willett, Chad Willett (Jaime), Brandon Stewart, Kelsie Stewart and Jobe Hurst (Kayla) and Jeremy Hurst, twelve great-grandchildren; Brayden and Ryder Scribner; Liam, Lennox, and Leif Underwood; Kyler, Carly, and Kennedy Willett; Adalyn, Peyton, and Jackson Willett, Kai Stewart, and countless others who knew and loved her.

Officiating will be Brother Gerald Bounds and pallbearers will be : Casey Scribner, Logan Underwood, Brayden Scribner, Ryder Scribner, Liam Underwood, Thadnel Willett.

Dearl Ray McKinney, age 66 of Ravenden, Arkansas, passed away September 7, 2024. Dearl was born April 13, 1958, in Rockford, Illinois to Jesse and Julia (Case) McKinney.

Dearl was an outdoors man. He loved to hunt, garden and was a collector of “things”. He loved showing off his latest treasures. He would often gift a treasure because he thought you might like it. Dearl didn’t have any of his own children but loved all his nieces, nephews and their families like his own.

Dearl liked to pittle, fabricate and like his dad, he was an inventor. He was always the life of the party. His beautiful smile and laugh will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his mother Julia McKinney of Ravenden, Arkansas; two brothers Gary McKinney of Herculaneum, Missouri and Lukas (Donna) McKinney of Pevely, Missouri; two sisters Shonnie French of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Renea (Len) Frey of Jonesboro, Arkansas; many nieces, nephews and other family.

He is preceded in death by his dad, Jesse (Jim) McKinney; one brother Jesse McKinney; and one niece Sonia Bounds.

Graveside service for Dearl McKinney, age 66, of Ravenden, Arkansas, will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Taylor Cemetery in Ravenden, Arkansas.

Barbara Ailene Ford

Barbara Ailene Ford, 82, of Greenfield, Missouri, formerly of Thayer, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024, at Cox Medical Center South of Springfield, Missouri. She was born on December 12, 1941, in Iowa, to the proud parents of

Luther Haney and Carrie Presley, both of whom precede her in death, along with her brother, Wayne Haney.

Barbara was united in marriage to Edward “Ed” Ford on February 23, 1963, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Together, they shared sixty-one wonderful years filled with love and companionship. Barbara was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Mammoth Spring.

She is survived by her loving husband, Edward “Ed” Ford, their two sons, Mark and Mike Ford, and their daughter, Debra Waterman. Barbara also cherished her role as a grandmother to four grandchildren and a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, sharing her love and joy with each of them.

In addition to her family, Barbara had a passion for sewing, often creating beautiful quilts for her loved ones. She will be remembered for her warm spirit and the love she shared with all who knew her.

Wilma Louise (Howell) Dunavin, age 94, of Pittsburg, Missouri, passed away August 22, 2024, at Loving Arms Memory Care, in Sedalia, Missouri. Wilma was born July 13, 1930, to Jesses and Lydia (Brazeal) Howell.

She was united in marriage to L.D. Dunavin on August 15, 1946. L.D. passed away just a few days before their 73^rd wedding anniversary. Wilma was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by two daughters Linda Boettger, husband Kent, and Beverly Casteel; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two sisters Nelma Brumley and Janice Moody; one sister-in-law Vickie Howell; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son Larry Dunavin; two brothers; three sisters; and two brothers-in-law.

Kenneth “Kenny” Clay Smith

Kenneth (Kenny) Clay Smith, 71, born on June 14, 1953, in Thayer, Missouri, and passed away on August 16, 2024, at his home. He was a devoted husband to Brenda Poulette, with whom he celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage, having tied the knot on April 5, 1974, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

Kenny was a proud father to his daughter, Celena LuDawn Russell, and a doting grandfather to his two grandsons, Ethan Russell and Elijah Russell, both of Koshkonong, Missouri. He found immense joy in spending time with his family, whether it was working on the farm, coaching softball team, or tending to his garden. His love for life was evident in his many hobbies, which included farming, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and nurturing the hummingbirds that frequented his yard. He loved his job and strongly believed in a mans responsibility in protecting and providing for his family.

A supporter of the First Baptist Church of Thayer, Kenny was known for his warm spirit and generous heart. He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda K. Smith, his daughter Celena Russell and her husband Nathanael Russell, grandsons Ethan Russell and Elijah Russell and a large extended family, including his brother, Jimmy (Bubba) Smith, sisters-in-law Debbie Smith and Connie Roberts, brothers-in-law Curtis and Barbara Poulette and Herbert and Annette Poulette, as well as ten nieces, nephews, twenty-eight great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great- nieces and nephews, eight aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, Basil Emmit Smith and Marjorie Crete McDonald Smith, his brothers Benny and Keith Smith, and three nephews; Virgil Poulette, Christopher and Philip Smith, one niece Jennifer Smith Collins, and great-nephew Devon Poulette. His family and friends will remember him fondly for his steadfast love, kindness, and the countless memories they shared. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and his friends that fondly called him Kudu or Hippie.

John Ellis Cathey, born on November 22, 1949, in Thayer, Missouri, passed away on August 9, 2024, in Charleston, Missouri. He was a devoted member of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Charleston and enjoyed a fulfilling life centered around his passions for golfing and raising cattle. John will be remembered fondly by his family and friends for his kindness and passion for life.

John is survived by his son, Greg Cathey and his wife Deana, and his cherished grandchildren, Cody, Ainsley, and Avery Cathey, all of Olive Branch, Mississippi. He also leaves behind two sisters, Nancy Cheryl McGheehe of Dexter, Missouri, and Carolyn Ann Witt of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, along with six nieces and a nephew.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Juanita Cathey; his brother, Charles “Charlie” Cathey; two sisters, Linda White and Dorothy Sue Miller; and his brother-in-law, Orvel Witt.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thayer, Missouri. Pastor John Archie of the Elm Street Baptist Church will officiate the service.

Arliss June Powell

Arliss June Powell, 87, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Baxter Regional Medical Center. He was born on April 15, 1937, in Fulton County, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Arvy William Powell and Elva (Hall) Powell. Arliss was a lifelong Fulton County resident and a devoted Pilot Church of Christ member, where he served as a deacon and later an elder.

He graduated from Mammoth Spring High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arkansas State College. His career in education began at Mammoth Spring Public Schools, where he worked from 1959 to 1975, followed by a role as Fulton County School Supervisor from 1975 to 1987. He returned to Mammoth Spring as Superintendent from 1987 to 1990, when he retired as an educator. After retiring, Arliss spent many enjoyable years farming and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

On December 26, 1959, he married Patricia Joy Smith. Their marriage was blessed with two sons: Dwayne (Misty) of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Wade (Sherry) of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. Four grandchildren: Sarah Powell of Iowa City, Iowa; Hannah Powell of Jonesboro, Arkansas; Collin (Ashlyn) Powell of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas; and Coltin (Hayley) Powell of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, as well as four great-grandchildren: Alayah, Watson, Adlee, and Harrison, all of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.

In addition to his wife, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he is survived by his sister, Jewell Garrison, of Myrtle, Missouri, and his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Anita Smith, of Koshkonong, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Richard Garrison.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Carter’s Funeral Home in Thayer, Missouri.

Brenda Gay Garrison was born the daughter of Otto Lovel and Grace Christine Hackworth Honeycutt on January 11, 1951, in Thayer, Missouri and departed this life August 2, 2024, at her home in Myrtle, Missouri at the age of 73 years. She married the love of her life, David Garrison, on May 24, 1969, in Garfield, Missouri. David and Brenda were happily married for 55 years.

She is survived by her husband David of Myrtle, Missouri; two daughters, Rhonda(Matt) Simpson and Robyn(Ben) Sims, of Thayer, Missouri; four grandchildren, Garrett(Shana) Smith of Myrtle, Shelby(Ryne) Long, Dylan Sims, Sydney Sims all of Thayer; four great grandchildren, Hagen Smith, Whitley Smith, Wade Long and Jensen Long; two sisters, Lucille(Ralph) Underwood of Thayer, Lana(Rick) Chester of Myrtle; six sisters-in-law, Linda Honeycutt, Mary Jane Honeycutt, Jessie Mae Garrison, Emma Garrison, Betty Garrison, Kathy(Roger) Huddleston; two brothers-in-law, Steve(Rochelle) Garrison, and Junior Brewer; dozens of nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto & Grace Honeycutt; two brothers, Eddie and David Honeycutt; two sisters, Sue Burkhead and Linda Brewer; one niece, Angela Sorrell; her in-laws, Herman and Lucille Garrison; and five brothers-in-law, Bill Garrison, Carroll Garrison, Tom Garrison, Bill Burkhead and Ernie Bray.

Brenda was a faithful Christian and member of the Byrd Freewill Baptist Church for over 51 years. She loved singing specials at church and much of her free time was spent listening to gospel music. She also enjoyed watching tv shows like The Gaither Gospel Hour, Andy Griffith, The Golden Girls and Reba. Brenda served as a Couch R-1 School Board member for six years, worked at the Garrison Store in Garfield for six years, and received the Myrtle Yester-Daze Community Service Award along with her husband in 2016.

Her favorite activities revolved around spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family. One of her greatest accomplishments in life was being the most caring and sweetest individual to everyone she met, despite the adversity of dealing with crippling arthritis for 52 years. She was the best listener and always quick to offer up a prayer or word of encouragement. Her love for family, friends, and neighbors was unparalleled and the strongest many would ever experience. Brenda would no doubt have received the favorite aunt award from her many nieces and nephews. She always made sure there were plenty of ice cream treats for every child who came to swim. Whether you knew her as a wife, momma, nanny, sister, aunt, cousin or friend, everyone used the same term… The Best! She was one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Willa Faye Mills

Willa Faye (Stroud) Mills was born December 16, 1935, in Heart, Arkansas to Andrew and Laura (Norris) Stroud. She departed this life on July 27, 2024, at her home in Mammoth Spring, at the age of 88. She was united in marriage to Noel Mills on August 5, 1959, and to this union four children were born.

Willa Faye was a beacon of warmth and kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Known and loved by her community, she shared her generous spirit with everyone she met. Her Southern hospitality was legendary, welcoming everyone with open arms and a warm smile. After 26 dedicated years of service, she retired from the Capital Mercury Shirt Company in Salem.

Her faith in the Lord was profound, and she gladly shared His love with others. As a lifelong member of the Heart General Baptist Church, Willa Faye devoted many years to teaching the preschool Sunday School class. In her later years, she became a faithful member of the Mammoth Spring First Baptist Church, where she enjoyed the company of the church ladies and served countless meals at VBS and church dinners.

Gardening was Willa Faye’s favorite hobby, and her beautiful flowers were a testament to her dedication and care. Her greatest joys were her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the lights of her life, bringing her immeasurable happiness and pride. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, cherishing every moment shared with them. Her unfailing love was the very heart of the family. She was the best wife, Mom, and Mama, whose presence will be deeply missed. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to her family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her children: Shelia Young of Mammoth Spring, AR, Charlene Riley and husband Rick of Thayer, MO, Jim Mills of Mammoth Spring, AR, and Tammy Jones and husband Chris of Mammoth Spring, AR. Six grandchildren: Clint Young, Luke Young, Sara Busch and husband Gage, Amy Turnbough and husband Nick, Taylor Mills and wife April, and Emily Pyland and husband Evan. Seven great grandchildren: Callie Jo and Cody Young, Judson and Quinn Busch, and Ella, Addy, and Ash Turnbough; along with many other special nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Noel Mills, her parents, sisters: Goldie Weaver, Grace Evans, Alice Pendergrass, Julia “Marie” Stroud, Imogene Crawford, Gerty Stroud; brothers: Orville Stroud, Glen Stroud, and Theodore Stroud, and one son-in-law, Harry Young.
