Mary “Sue” Barnes

Mary “Sue” Barnes, 81, passed away the afternoon of May 31, 2024, in Springfield, Missouri. Sue was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a faithful Christian, having been a member of the Church of Christ for over 70 years. Sue loved people and enjoyed working with seniors, in particular. She was the Director of the Fun and Friends Senior Center of Thayer, Missouri for 20 years and spent countless hours doing fundraisers with members of the center and community, raising the money for the center to purchase the current senior center building downtown. She loved working in the meal delivery program too. When Sue retired from Fun and Friends, she took a job as a driver for Ready Transportation taking passengers to doctor appointments in Arkansas and Missouri. She retired from this position after 15 years. Sue loved her family and one of her favorite roles was that of being MeMaw to her grandson, Alex. They’ve shared many fond memories of her MeMaw bag which was filled with treasures that little boys loved. She always had time to fly foam rockets, airplanes, and race Hot Wheel cars.

Sue is survived by her husband of 58 years, Othel (Barney), their son Jamie and his wife Billie, and one grandson, Alex. She is also survived by two sisters, Pat Arnold (Glenn) and Karen Weems (Wade) and several, special nieces and nephews.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Quentin and Margaret Lemmons, and seven siblings (Peggie Lemmons, Bill Lemmons, Bob Lemmons, Shirley Wiles, Dick Lemmons, Karol Lemmons, and David Lemmons).

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorials be made to the Paragould Children’s Home of Paragould, Arkansas.

Charles Lester Wren, Jr.

Charles Lester Wren, Jr., 79 of Springfield, Missouri came into this world on March 19, 1945, in Mexia, Texas, the son of Charles Lester Wren, Sr. and Zelda Juanita Wren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and one great-granddaughter.
He is survived by 4 children including Kelly A. Rice, Charles H. Wren, and wife Erin Wren, Christopher J. Wren, and wife Marisa Wren, and Terri Haskins and husband Zak Haskins, 11 grandchildren and spouses, 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.

Charles “Papa” Wren spent his life selflessly serving his family without question or hesitation. His main vocation in life was an over the road truck driver, but his family was his life-long career. He spent his spare time boating, fishing, and driving until the end. “Papa” was compassionate, rarely met a stranger, and was kind to all. Whether a business person in a suit, or a fisherman in waders, he would talk to anyone – and he left each person with a little more wisdom than they had before. He will be missed, loved, and always remembered.

Graveside services for Charles Lester Wren, Jr. will be held Monday, June 3, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery, Howell County, Missouri, with the Reverend David Ball officiating, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains, Missouri.

Military rites will be performed by our West Plains Honor Guard and the Missouri Military Honors Program.

Barbara Jean Rhoades

Barbara Jean Rhoades, age 78, of Wakefield, New Hampshire, passed away May 17, 2024, in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Barbara was born September 2, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri to Noah and Helen Leona (Mainprize) Rhoades.

Barbara graduated in 1963 from North Penn High School, Lansdale, Pennsylvania. In 1967, Barbara received her Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Missouri University. Barbara started working at Hazelwood School District as a teacher for many years. Then she became a teacher at Amherst Junior High School in Amherst, New York. Later in life she ran her own ceramics business, then started working at Hampshire Pewter, in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

Barbara lived for many years in Wakefield, New Hampshire and she retired from Hampshire Pewter. She was a member of the Bellefontaine United Methodist Church. She was loved by all that knew she and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her brother Robert V. Rhoades, of Newville, Pennsylvania.

She is preceded in death by her parents and many loved ones.

Belinda Kay Pendergrass

Belinda Kay Pendergrass, 51, West Plains, Missouri, went home to be with Jesus, May 18, 2024, in Columbia, Missouri.

She was born the daughter of the late Jerry and Laura Pendergrass, West Plains, Missouri.

She is survived by her mother, Laura Pendergrass, West Plains, Missouri; one sister, Melanie Wyatt and husband, Joel, West Plains, Missouri; one very special nephew, Landry Pitts, who he called Aunt B, and very special fur baby, Nella, who she spoiled rotten; her four aunts, Charm Eagleman and husband, Tim, Caulfield, Missouri; Dee Lewis and husband, Lanny, West Plains, Missouri; Sherri Cromer and husband, Craig, West Plains, Missouri, and Phyllis Schimming and husband, Jim, Maryville, Missouri; two uncles, Jim Pendergrass and wife Marilyn, Lexington Missouri and Robert Pendergrass and wife Fayetta Pendergrass; thirteen cousins, Missy Eagleman and husband Steve, Sarah Beth Huett and husband Joel, Holly Bee Stephens and husband Bryson, Emily Richardson and husband Reggie, Bethany Hamby, Adam Lewis and wife Erin, Allison Wrenfrow and husband Tim, Kathleen Koone and husband Michael, Matthew Cromer and wife, Jennifer, Brenda Neff and husband, Marc, Becci Moore and husband Brandon, Beth Marie, and Brian Schimming and Melissa, and several second and third cousins. We must talk about one special second cousin, Levi Wrenfrow, who we call our miracle baby. We call him this because it took 17 years for that to happen. Belinda checked on Allison almost every day when she was pregnant with Levi, and then several days after he was born. She went to his dedication at his church, and of course he sat on Aunt B’s lap most of the service. She thought he was pretty special.

She is preceded in death by her dad, Jerry Pendergrass, her grandparents, Claude and Madge Pendergrass

and Jim and Jane Phipps, a very special second cousin Abrille Neff.

She was a member of Faith Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in West Plains, Missouri and attended faithfully until she could no longer because of health issues. Her sister, Melanie and her nephew, Landry made her life whole. She had a heart as big as a mountain and a smile that would light up a room, with a laugh that was infectious. She loved people and her kindness and personality echoed that. She worked at OZH Hospital. She scheduled all the surgeries for many of the local doctors. She loved her job and loved her work family.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. At the Faith Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 22, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m.

Interment will be on Thursday March 23, 2024, in the Howell Memorial Park, Pomona, Missouri with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. in West Plains, Missouri.

Robert “Bob” Sorrell

Robert “Bob” Gene Sorrell, age 91, of Myrtle, Missouri, passed away May 19,2024 in West Plains, Missouri, surrounded by loved ones. Bob was born October 27,1932, in Myrtle, Missouri, to Finis E. and Lillie Emma (Risner) Sorrell.

Bob married the love of his life Mary Lou Boyd on June 4, 1952, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Within this marriage four children were born, and they were happily married for 71 years.

Bob loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball. In his younger days he tried out for short stop for the St. Louis Browns. He enjoyed gun trading, gun shows, quail hunting and basketball. But above all things he loved his family and spending time with them.

He was a member of Myrtle Freewill Baptist Church and was a faithful follower of God. Bob will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by one son, Bobby (Tammy) Sorrell of Gatewood, Missouri; one daughter, Stacee (Dave) Peters, of West Plains, Missouri; nineteen grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great- granddaughter; one sister, Mable Jo Gardner of Springfield, Missouri; one brother-in-law, George Boyd (Mary Lou) of Doniphan, Missouri; several nieces and nephews.

He is proceeded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter Mary Catherine Sorrell; one son Finis Boyd Sorrell; two brothers; and one sister.

Mary Hasseltine Hobbs

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Hasseltine Hobbs, age 86, of Mammoth Spring, AR, on May 10, 2024, in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Mary, fondly known as Hasseltine, was born on August 7, 1937, in Fryatt, AR, to her parents, Samual and Verna Smith. She was united in marriage on November 13, 1955, in Mammoth Spring, AR, to Harold Dean Hobbs. They were married for 57 years and were blessed with three children, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Hasseltine was a dedicated member of the Mammoth Spring Church of Christ.

Hasseltine was a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose presence brought joy and warmth to all who knew her. She found immense happiness in spending time with her family and friends. She loved camping, fishing, and vacationing with her husband, Dean. She cherished every moment shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hasseltine’s culinary talents were well-known, and she delighted her loved ones with her delicious chocolate sheet cakes, bundt cakes, and strawberry pies at family gatherings. Her love for ice cream was no secret, and she made sure to enjoy a bowl several times a week.

Hasseltine’s passing leaves an empty space in our hearts, but we find solace in knowing that she is now in the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior, free from the grips of Alzheimer’s disease. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Hasseltine is survived by her son, Jerry (Sharon) Hobbs of Cape Girardeau, MO; her son, Larry (Amber) Hobbs of Rolla, MO; her daughter, Linda (Robert) Crase of Thayer, MO; her grandchildren, Amanda (Aaron) Brower of Springfield, MO; Allen Crase of Thayer, MO; Angela Crase of Jonesboro, AR; Joseph (Monica) Hobbs of Cape Girardeau, MO; Kimberly Hobbs of Franklin, TN; Emma Hobbs and Abby Hobbs of Rolla, MO; and her great-grandchildren, Jaxson Hobbs and Haylee Hobbs of Cape Girardeau, MO; and Amilia Brower and Ethan Brower of Springfield, MO. She is also survived by her brother, Sammy (Becky) Smith of Waynesville, MO; and her brother-in-law, Fred Wesson of Olive Branch, MS.

Hasseltine was preceded in death by her parents, Samual and Verna Smith; her husband, Dean; her sisters, Nadine Wesson and Geraldine Smith; and her grandchildren, James Hobbs and Jarrod Hobbs.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, MO, followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Barry O’Dell, preacher of the Mammoth Spring Church of Christ, will officiate.

Dennis Newell Hobbs

Dennis Newell Hobbs, of Thayer, Missouri, passed away on May 10, 2024 in Pottersville, Missouri. Dennis was born to Elbert Hobbs and Rozella Pauline Gangestead Hobbs on September 11, 1948, in Elmhurst, Illinois. His parents provided him with a strong foundation and instilled in him the values he carried throughout his life. Dennis had a deep passion for music, and he expressed his talent through playing the guitar, piano, and singing. He diligently performed at the Family and Friends Senior Center, bringing joy to those around him. Additionally, Dennis showcased his musical skills by playing the guitar at the Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, Veterans Memorial Park, as well as regularly entertaining visitors at the Mammoth Spring State Park Visitors Center.

Having a special affinity for the guitar, Dennis spent countless hours honing his craft on this instrument. It was through the guitar that he connected with others and shared his love for music. In addition to his musical endeavors, Dennis generously volunteered as a counselor at the First Baptist Church Celebrate and Recovery Program of Thayer, Missouri. He selflessly offered guidance and support to those in need, leaving a lasting impact on the community. Dennis lived his life in service of others. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared his love and faith with everyone around him. He found joy in playing his guitar and sharing the gospel with everyone, even those who felt forgotten. Dennis’ love and inspiration will live on through his family and friends.

Dennis is survived by his children, Tammy (Woody) Lamb of Pottersville, Missouri, Danny Hobbs of Pottersville, Missouri, Jennifer (Jerry) Hibbs of Grandbury, Texas, Arthur (Jennifer) Hobbs of West Plains, Missouri, Amber Shaw of Florida, Erik Hobbs of Cape Coral, Florida, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents Elbert and Rozella Hobbs and his brother.

Dennis Newell Hobbs will be remembered for his musical talent, his kind spirit, and his dedication to helping others. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love.

Services will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Arnold and pallbeares will be : Arthur Hobbs, Danny Hobbs, Cody Mazingo, Kyle Mazingo, Tristan Shaw, and Kellan Shaw. Honorary pallbearers will be : Erik Hobbs, CJ Carey, Austin Hibbs, Cameron Hibbs, and Woody Lamb.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel of Thayer, Missouri.

James “Jim” Donald Meredith

James “Jim” Donald Meredith, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on May 8, 2024, in his hometown of Thayer, Missouri at 88 years of age. He was born on November 15, 1935, in Thayer, to his parents Mancil and Mary Jasper Meredith.

Jim was a man with a heart of gold, always going above and beyond for his family and friends. He had a passion for playing pool and was well known for his skills in the game. When he wasn’t playing pool, James enjoyed collecting antiques and guns, finding joy in buying and selling unique pieces. He especially loved spending time in Arizona and eagerly looked forward to swap meets with his friends.

Jim will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his dedication to his hobbies, and his warm-hearted nature. He is survived by his brother John and wife Cindy Meredith of Thayer, as well as six nieces and nephews, and nineteen great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mancil “Buck” Meredith and Mary Meredith, his sister Judy Ann Meredith, and brother Allen Wayne Meredith.

James “Jim” Donald Meredith will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever be cherished, and the impact he had on the lives of those around him will never be forgotten.

Sarah Ada Howell, age 45, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away May 4, 2024, in Kirkwood, Missouri. Sarah was born June 27, 1978, to Paul and Mary Lou (Stafford) Howell in Springfield, Missouri.

Sarah worked at the Jennings and Confluence School Districts in St. Louis, Missouri, as an educator—-teaching, coaching, and assistant principal for 22 years. She had recently been hired by the Hazelwood School District to begin a new chapter in her life.

Sarah was an avid, competitive game player and sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and Denver Broncos. She was a gifted athlete, participating in many sports throughout her life. Sarah loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling to various scenic locations.

Sarah loved her family. She had a strong faith in God and believed in the power of prayer. She was known for her bright smile, contagious laugh, quick wit, and generous spirit. She had a multitude of friends, family members, and students who loved her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her parents Paul and Mary Lou Howell, Thayer, MO; sister Marjorie Howell, Thayer, MO; brother Clayton Howell(Crystal),Thayer, MO; sister Dawn Johnson, (Jeremiah), Gardiner MT; she had special nephews and a niece Casey Howell (Melissa Whitworth), Garden City, MO; Tyler Harkleroad (Kennidy Helmick), Little Rock, AR; Cody Howell (Isaphene Pierce), Koshkonong, MO; Wyatt and Madison Johnson, Gardiner, MT; great-nephews Kayson, Kylyn, Samuel, Ryan, Chancey, and Lane.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Charlotte Childers; her paternal grandparents, Fred and Ada Howell; and several other loved family members.
