Lavern O. Miller

Lavern O. Miller was born the son of Claude Earl Miller and Doshia Ray (Leek) Miller on October 7, 1921 in Rockbridge, Missouri and died on September 10, 2017 at his home in Willow Springs, Missouri at the age of 95 years.

He was united in marriage on April 16, 1946 to Jessie M. Williams.

He is survived his wife, Jessis Mae Miller; one daughter, Beverly Tooley and husband, Kenneth, one son-in-law, Perry Durnell; three brothers, George Miller, Willis Miller and Dorman Miller; one sister, Allie Gentry; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Doshia Miller; one daughter, Betty Jane Durnell; two brothers, Therman Miller and Marvin Miller; two sisters, Geneva Miller and Jane Dubil; and one great great grandchild.

Lavern joined the U. S. Army on August 19, 1942, landed on Omaha Beach on July 10, 1944, and followed General Patton through France and Germany ending up in Salzburg, Austria at the end of World War II.

Lavern was a Christan and a member of the Pomona Christian Church.

He began working for the Frisco Railroad after returning from the war and retired after thirty six year of service.

He was an avid fisherman and also loved spring turkey season and squirrel hunting. Lavern and Jessie Mae would often fish and hunt together.

Lavern loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He played baseball and softball and coached softball teams in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He still loved to watch the Willow Springs High School softball team play.

Most of all, Lavern loved spending time with his family. He will truly be missed by his family and all those that knew him.

Church services will be held at 2:00 PM at the Pomona Christian Church on Wednesday September 13, 2017 with Reverend Marcus Allen and Reverend Scott Tooley officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 PM until service time.
Burial will be at the Howell Memorial Park Cemetery with services under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, West Plains.

William R. McGuire

William Robert (Bill) McGuire was born August 10, 1940 in Redlands, California, and passed away September 8, 2017 in West Plains, Missouri. Bill will be remembered by his family and friends as a mentor and caring person. His quick mind and dry sense of humor was such an enjoyment, and will be missed.

He was accomplished at so many things in his life. He loved sports, especially baseball. In his younger years, he was an outstanding baseball pitcher. He pitched two no-hitters, (one a perfect game), and was voted Most Valuable Player when in high school. He entered municipal government service with the City of Redlands at age 19 and it became his life’s work. Starting as an entry level file clerk, he rose to the position of Finance Director as well as City Manager of multiple cities over a 45+ year career. He also loved his life as a gentleman rancher. Over the years he had orchards, cattle and American Quarter Horses. He enjoyed competing in sheepdog trials with several of his Border Collies he trained through the years.

Bill is survived by the following: Pam his wife, Sister Dorothy Boyce and husband Larry, Brother David McGuire and wife Mary Ellen, children Mike McGuire and wife Donna, Kim McGuire Bryant and husband Kirk, Kelly McGuire Ebner and husband Werner, step children Maureen Barnett and husband Rial, Deana Tison and husband Ryan. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford, mother Roberta, sister Barbara, and brother Ed. He also had 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren with another due in October.

There will be a get together of friends and family at the Caulfield Community Center Thursday September 14, 2017 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Please come and celebrate Bill’s life with us.

He was united in marriage April 4, 1947 in West Plains, Missouri to Hazel Romans, who preceded him in death January 28, 2011.

Mrs. Case passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Ozarks Medical Center, West Plains, Missouri.

Clara Case was born September 5, 1937, in Piney Community in Missouri to Bernice Wheeler. She received her education at Piney School, Missouri. Clara Jo was raised by her grandparents, John Paris and Clara Wheeler.

On August 18, 1955, she was married to Oren Barton at Alton, Missouri. On July 22, 1988, she was married to Charles Case at Koshkonong, Missouri.

Mrs. Case retired from Eaton/Invensys. She attended Calvary General Baptist Church. Clara enjoyed fishing, attending church, visiting friends and spending time with her grandchildren.

Michael “Mike” James Kelly, age 57, of West Plains, Missouri departed this life Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family as was his wish.

Vallie Mayfield, 88, entered into heaven Friday, June 23, after battling bone cancer. She will be greatly missed.

Vallie Caroline Mayfield was born on January 11, 1929, to John and Rosie Marshall in Kirbyville, Missouri.

At age 6 Vallie was adopted by William Richard and Lela Geist of Salem, Missouri. She attended Salem Public Schools and graduated from Salem High School in 1946. Vallie went on to earn a Registered Nurse degree from Missouri Baptist School of Nursing in St. Louis in 1949.

Vallie was married to Roy Mayfield on October 22, 1949. To this union three daughters were born, Cherry Elaine, Joyce Ann and Donna Sue.

Vallie worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in St. Louis, Hannibal, Kirbyville and St. Charles. She was employed at West Vue Nursing Home in West Plains. Mrs. Mayfield began the Health Occupations Program at the Votech School Continue reading
